Marjorie Rosenbaum Obituary

Marjorie Suzanne Rice Daltry Rosenbaum of Middletown, CT passed away early Sunday morning, October 20, 2013 in Delta, Colorado after a short illness. She was born May 10, 1921 in Hartford, CT and was the daughter of Louis Haskell Rice and Guilielma Murray Rice, and the sister of Charles Murray Rice. She was a resident of Connecticut her entire life, growing up and living in West Hartford before locating to the Middletown area in the late 1950s. Marjorie was a graduate of Hall High School and Radcliffe College of Cambridge, MA in 1943, as well as one of the original graduates in Wesleyan University's Graduate Liberal Studies Program in 1955. She was a woman of cultured substance, demonstrative presence, and memorable performance. She was an English teacher in the West Hartford and Haddam schools and taught in Wesleyan's GLSP. In 1967 she was the founder and for many years thereafter the principal strength of CAUSE (Community & University Services for Education), a program to facilitate cooperative projects between Wesleyan and the Middletown community. Later she was chief administrator of Wesleyan's Educational Studies Program from 1973 to 1985, usually with her German Shepherd dog in follow. Always with a song, she enriched thousands of students and left a large imprint on the Connecticut educational community. Beyond her educational pursuits and accomplishments, her life passion was song and stage. She excelled as a child singer with her brother Charles on a WDRC weekly radio show. Her singing highlights, with perfect pitch, included as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Julliard Orchestra at Lincoln Center in NYC. On stage, she thrived in the spotlight. In musical theatre she performed throughout New England with summer stage in Rockport, MA and the Berkshires, the Simsbury Light Opera Company, and traveling companies from Wesleyan. She made the cast for Kiss Me Kate on Broadway. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Joseph S. Daltry, Wesleyan University's first Professor of Music and founder of its Music Department; she is survived by her husband Robert A. Rosenbaum, Wesleyan University Professor of Sciences and Mathematics Emeritus. Her dear brother Charles of Simsbury, CT, to whom she was connected in spirit and song, predeceased her by five months. She is survived by: her nephews of Simsbury, Charles Jr., Christopher, Stephen, Timothy, and Hugh Rice; her stepdaughter Faith Daltry Compo of Rhinebeck, NY; and her stepsons Robert, Joseph and David Rosenbaum of Delta, Colorado.
Christian rites of funeral burial were performed on Monday, October 28, 2013 at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford, CT, where she rests along with her parents and aunt. A memorial service at Wesleyan University will be planned for Spring, 2014. Donations in lieu of flowers could be made to the Middlesex County Community Foundation, 211 South Main Street, Middletown, CT 06457. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at

To this day, I miss my dear friend, Marjorie. As I age, I realize more and more her vibrancy with which she continued to entertain others at all times. I trust she is continuing her kind, vivacious ways in another world.

In 1961 I was a new (read green) teacher at Haddam Junior High School. By some stroke of good fortune, Marjorie and I were next door to each other, separated only by a folding partition. That year and the years later driving back and forth together to West Hartford were seminal ones for me, and my own students owe Marjorie for anything I ever did right. Our association was the equivalent of a graduate course or maybe a whole degree's worth. And the friendship that extended over the next 50 years was a gift that I'll always cherish.

To Marjorie's family- Your wife, aunt, or step-mother- She was my English/Latin teacher. She encouraged me to do the best I could. She sand to us, read to us(The Snow Goose at Thanksgiving) and introduced us to new authors and poets. My life was changed from that time forward and I will always be grateful. I wish you sincere condolences and she will always have a place in my heart.

Marjorie's arrival at Haddam Junior High School in 1960 absolutely rocked our world. She taught us English, Latin, and opened a whole world of music, art, theater. For her, I strove to be the best student I could be. For her, I tried for 40 years to be the kind of teacher she was. I never made it.

Marjorie made every day musical and taught me so much about poetry and the English language. She was still an amazing teacher even in her nineties. I will miss her greatly.

Mrs. Daltry taught at Middletown High School also. She was my freshman English teacher in 1957 -1958. She made me love Shakespeare as well as musical theater. I think it's amazing that she married Bob Rosenbaum, who taught me calculus at Weslyan. What a morning of memories.

I knew even then, in 1962, when I knew very little, that she was something special, but I had no idea she was so extraordinarily accomplished. A remarkable life if ever there was one.

I am so privileged to have had Marjorie as a dearest friend and close confidant for more than 30 years. I loved her singing and ability to recall the exact right song at the right moment. I will miss her more than words can describe.

Dear Mr Rosenbaum, my deep sympathy in losing a great life partner. Thank you so much for bringing her to our Haddam Junior High reunion last September. She once again wowed us with her wit, charm and vivacity. We delighted in our trips down memory lane from 50years ago. Marjorie certainly left her indelible mark on each of us. Her can do attitude and encouragement blessed me and helped me to believe in myself. She gave me the Latin award that year and I enjoyed the musical productions as well. I'm 66 yo and still practicing as a CPA in Southington. Thanks again David Pytlik
