Don Hastie Obituary

DON HASTIE JUN 14, 1929 - SEP 25, 2010 Don Hastie, Papa Don as most people knew him, was born in Modesto, CA on June 14, 1929. He was 81 years old when he closed his eyes and peacefully went to sleep after a long fight with a heart condition. Papa Don truly had a heart of gold and was a loyal friend to all he met. He loved to fish, hunt, ride horses, golf, and most of all care for his loving friends and family. Don was a butcher for local grocery stores for 55 years, was a member of the Bass Fishing Club and Ski Patrol, and a diver for Search and Rescue. Most importantly, Don was the most wonderful devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, and the best friend anyone could have asked for. Our entire family is grateful to have had such memorable times with him. He meant the world to us and we are truly blessed to have had him in our lives. We love you, Papa! Don leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years, Barbara Hastie, five daughters: Tami May (husband Dan May), Candy Bava (husband Ralph Bava), Jan Clark (husband Bill Clark), Jackie Schei, Penny Hastie, 7 grandchildren: Billy Clark, Tammy Gonsales, Amie Hanney, Tiffany Schei, Lindsay Bava, Ryan May, Amber May, and 7 great-grandchildren: Cassie Vasquez, Christina Doige, Tristin Clark, Erik Clark, Tabatha Morris, Manny Gonsales, and Brandon Gonsales. He also leaves behind additional family: his sister, Mary Jane Hansen, his brothers, Harlon Smith, Mike Smith, and George Smith, his niece Shannon Holson, and nephew Michael Russell and children. Don is preceded in death by his grandparents Dave and Ida Smith, mother Gladys Wheeler, stepson Dennis Moore, and great-grandson Anthony Edward Chavez. A visitation will be held at Franklin & Downs Colonial Chapel, 12th and G Street, on Thursday, September 30, from 4:00-5:00 pm (family only) and 5:00-8:00 pm (friends and family). A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, October 1 at 1:00 pm at Franklin & Downs Colonial Chapel, with burial to follow at Acacia Memorial Park on Scenic Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association. www.modbee.com/obituaries

I am not related to Grandpa Don but he made me feel like family. He is one of the sweetest men and I loved being able to get to know him. I feel very grateful that I was able to partake in Sunday night dinners and other events with him and his family. His amazing attitude and uplifting smile will not be forgotten.
