Neil Phillips Obituary

Neil H. Phillips Jr.
January 7, 1961 - August 16, 2012
Neil Harold Phillips Jr., 51 of Patterson, passed away Thursday evening in a tragic car accident. Those who knew him often said he lived for God and his family. His quiet and gentle personality, combined with his strength and smile, made him an incredible man.
Neil was born in Modesto, CA and raised in Patterson, CA.  He was a fifth generation Californian and lived on the land originally owned by his great-grandparents.  He attended St. Stanislaus Parish School and Central Catholic High School. He graduated from UC Davis with a B.S. in Plant Science and a M.S. in Integrated Pest Management.
During college, Neil married his sweetheart, Stacy Fields and one year later they settled down in Patterson where they raised their five children. Neil joined his father in the field of Agriculture as an Agronomist & Pest Control Advisor where his technical expertise in the field was valued by many. Most recently he handled corporate accounts as a Territory Sales Manager. His passion and dedication to continued education were well respected throughout the industry.
He was an active parishioner at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and served on the Parish Finance Council and as a member of the RCIA Team. He enjoyed attending the Traditional Latin Rite Mass on Sundays with his family and praying with the Opus Dei Men's group. He believed in the sanctity of human life and especially defended the unborn.
He was a strong supporter of Catholic education and enjoyed participating in the development of Central Catholic High School as a member of the school board. Neil was also an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved to play basketball with family and friends after enjoying a meal prepared by his beloved wife.
Neil is survived by the love of his life and bride of 29 years, Stacy Phillips.  He is also survived by his 5 children:  Lauren O'Brien (and her husband Joe and their children Grace and Joseph), Kelly Flynn (and her husband John and their son Jackson), and his sons Michael, David, and James Phillips. He is survived by his beloved brother Samuel Phillips (and his wife Nitzi) and his sisters Cindy Georgette and Susan Foreman and their families.
The viewing will be on Thursday 8/23 from 4:00-6:00 pm (Salas Bros. Funeral Chapel - 419 Scenic Dr. Modesto, CA). The Rosary will be on Thursday 8/23 at 7:00 pm (St. Joseph's Catholic Church - 1813 Oakdale Rd. Modesto, CA). The Funeral Mass will be on Friday 8/24 at 9:30 am (St. Joseph's Catholic Church - 1813 Oakdale Rd. Modesto, CA). In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Neil H. Phillips Jr. may be directed to a college fund established for the younger sons by family and friends (contact Tammy Menezes for details at [email protected]).

No words can offer comfort except those found in Scripture. The passage that jumped to mind immediately was Wis 4:7 "The just man, though he die early, shall be at rest."

As we started RCIA last night know that you and your family remain in our hearts and prayers. Your friends in Christ from Holy Family, Copperas Cove, TX.

I am so sorry for your loss. Neil Jr. was as has been said numerous times already here a very nice man, and a devoted Father, Husband, Son, and Brother. I trimmed a tree in his yard several years back and we had a very nice conversation about our daughters going off to college. Again, I'm so sorry, Stacy and family.

Dear Stacy & Family,

My wife Linda, daughter Cyndi, and I extend our sympathies and prayers to each of you, and will offer prayers for both Neil and his father, both whom we admired and were honored to serve during our years in Patterson. May they continue to do God's work in heaven.

Dear Sam and Family,

I remember Neil from high school. He was sweet, gentle, always smiling and happy. I echo Father M's words, Earth's loss, Heaven's gain. My prayer group from St. Patrick's in Ripon said a rosary for Neil tonight-and for the family. May God's Holy Angels watch over all of you during this most difficult and painful of times. Your loss is heartbreaking.

We are so saddened by your loss. Stacy, I remember how Neil's eyes would shine when he spoke about you and how relieved he was when he called to say you were ok after a hospital procedure. And how he wanted to make that Easter Vigil at St Joe's perfect for you when you were in Rome. I remember when I got that vigil Mass live on my computer he watched it with me, hoping to get a glimpse of you. I hope your whole family knows that he is still so very close to you, just on the other side of a very thin veil.

August 22, 2012

Stacy and family,

The tears are flowing because Neil's loss is sudden, unexpected, and seems out of place. But then there is the accompanying thought that God does all things well and in His time. It's hard to wrap one's thoughts around that because of the pain, but the bedrock of our faith assures us that it is true. And what is more, we also know that if God called him Home, it is because Neil accomplished what he was called to do. He did it. He finished well. He is a shining example of one for whom it would not have mattered when God called him because He was ready. He was present, doing God's will in the small things as well as the big stuff: BE-ing to fullness a good son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend, leader, and learner - an example to the world of the face, hands, feet, and heart of Christ his Savior. When a person is loved greatly the grief is great because he is missed in so many ways. Words cannot express the depth of these feelings and the varying degrees different ones of us feel, but this we know, Stacy, that your grief and that of your family is great and that each of us enters into that grief with you. Thanks be to God that in the light of eternity this separation will be short, even though right now it feels interminable. I pray we all may open our hearts to experience that which God wants to offer us through the death of this saint of His. We can be sure that Neil will continue to work for us there in Heaven, doing the Father's will as he did on earth. I pray we may know the comfort of the Holy Spirit and the hope of Heaven as we wend our way through this time of sadness. My prayers are for you and your family now and as you continue your own journeys to finish well and join Neil one day around the Great Throne of God. May God bless you and keep you under His wing, close to His heart, sheltered and protected in His loving care.

August 22, 2012

Neil, may your powerful example in life on earth be felt ten-fold in Heaven. Keep working my friend, you are an inspiration. Phillips family, you are in our prayers.

May God tenderly embrace the Phillips Family to comfort all of you .... I am deeply saddened by this tragic news as Neil was a very special holy man with a big smile & warm heart who always greeted us by name when attending RCIA; gave great encouragement; and shared in the extreme happiness in our conversion to the Catholic faith. I loved seeing Neil & Stacy with their children at Holy Mass for they are a true example of how Our Lord wishes a family to be and at times I smiled with a few tears from the beauty gazing upon them. My heart aches for dearest Stacy & their precious Children.... Neil will always be fondly remembered for I know He is doing more faithful work for God in Heaven as a very magnificant Angel for us still here on earth. Neil, you made a difference to many of us by your superb example and sharing your knowledge of our Catholic Faith and I thank you. God Bless You & Rest in Peace
