Eric Miller Obituary

Carmel, CA – Eric T. Miller, age 85, died on August 29, 2013 of complications from a brain tumor. He was the Chief Investment Strategist at Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) from 1979-1998, and served as Senior Advisor with DLJ and its successor firm, Credit Suisse, First Boston, until 2002. At DLJ, he chaired the Investment Policy and Stock Selection Committees and his "Random Gleanings" encapsulating his commentary on a wide variety of financial, economic and political topics were a must-read on Wall Street for years.
Eric began his investment career with the New York Trust Company (later Chemical Bank) in 1955 and then spent 13 years at Dominick and Dominick LLC, serving as head of the Investment Department and Research Director prior to becoming Chief Investment Strategist at Oppenheimer Capital until 1979. After leaving DLJ, he became a Senior Contributor to Bankstocks.com where CEO of the site, Thomas Brown, described Eric as "one of the most original thinkers on Wall Street".
Eric graduated from his beloved Dartmouth College in 1950 and studied at NYU graduate school of business after serving as a Marine Corps Officer in Korea.
Throughout his outstanding financial career, Eric invariably found time to serve his community and industry. Prior to moving to California in 1995 with his dear wife, Susan, he had been a lifelong and active community member of Bronxville, NY, serving as President of the Community Fund of Bronxville, the Bronxville Recreational Council and President of the Bronxville Field Club where he was an avid tennis and squash player. He also served on the United Hospitals Investment Committee and on the board of trustees of Kimball Union Academy.
In Carmel, Eric quickly became an active and generous member of his community, serving on the financial committees of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, the Carmel Public Library, the SPCA for Monterey County and the Community Foundation of Monterey. He also became a golf enthusiast in his 60s and played both golf and tennis regularly into his 80s at Quail Golf Club and the Pebble Beach and Tennis Club. His life was wonderfully productive, serving the public in the management of their savings, serving his community and profession, and serving to the improvement of education.
Eric loved life fully. He lived his in a compelling spirit of strength, integrity, kindness and wit. He is cherished and remembered by countless friends; his wife of 33 years, Susan; his brother, Don; his first wife, Eileen Stuhlreyer (who is mother of his three children); his children, Kathy Beinfield, Eric J. (Peggy) Miller and Carolyn (Paul) Bednarz; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services on Cape Cod will be held on Saturday, October 12. Arrangements are directed by The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, California.
