Priscilla Nesbitt Obituary

Priscilla Shepard Nesbitt

September 5, 1911 ~ September 26, 2012

CARMEL - Priscilla was born in Iowa and moved west with her family when she was three. She grew up mostly in the East Bay, where as a child she sat by the window at bedtime to watch the lamplighter make his way up the street. In her teens she and her friends took the ferry to San Francisco on big date nights.

Priscilla, her older sister Rosalind, and their mother, Nadine Shepard, lived with her grandmother, Stella Woodruff, who ruled with an iron hand. Nadine was a classical pianist who taught music and played the scores of silent movies on the organ in theaters. Priscilla and Nadine loved each other dearly. Priscilla attended U.C. Berkeley, planning to teach music history, until the Depression made it impossible to continue. She received an elementary teaching credential from what later became Chico State College. Priscilla moved to Carmel in 1947. In 1960, newly widowed, she began a mid-life career in Carmel schools, starting at River and including Sunset and Carmel Middle School. She loved her work as a language arts teacher, and inspired many students to keep books in their lives long after leaving her classroom.

Priscilla enjoyed retirement, volunteering with the Carmel Music Society, the SPCA wildlife center, Hospice, and the Monterey County AIDS Project. She was devoted to and delighted by a long line of cats and she gardened well into old age.

Priscilla is survived by her children: Brian Casiday (Elisabeth), Penelope Sky, and Joe Nesbitt; and by her stepson, Michael Nesbitt. She was predeceased by her first grandchild, Emily Nesbitt; and leaves grandchildren Abe Nesbitt, Keigan and Harte Skydecker, and Jennifer Casiday Menjivar. When reminded that she had six great-grandchildren, Priscilla would exclaim in disbelief, "Isn't that ridiculous!" They are Zoe and Mary Nesbitt, Jacob Miller, Kaiden and Isla Skydecker, and John Elliot Nesbitt.

Priscilla moved to Carmel Terrace, a beautiful assisted living facility, in June, 2011. With boundless gratitude, we salute Karen Crossman and her attentive staff of gentle, loving, highly skilled caregivers.

Priscilla's ashes will be buried at Big Creek in the spring, in a spot that she selected.

Priscilla will be remembered by all of her former students with deep affection, and gratitude for her inspiration, vibrancy and strength of character. She was a guiding light whose flame will always be deeply embedded in each and every one of us. Until we meet again, my dear, my pen will always be carried by the touch of your hand.

My Dear Penelope, Joe, Brian and Mike - Our paths have gone in different directions, but my memories of living across the street from you on Camino Real are as clear as if they were yesterday. I remember fun times growing up at your house and mine. Priscilla was always so kind and so dear. She had such a wonderful sense of humor. I always felt welcome in your home.

In recent years I would run into Priscilla at Safeway, shopping with her caregiver; and I would be truly amazed that she was still so spry and always charming.

Please accept sincere condolences from me, my husband Dar, my brother Michael and my sister Helen.

With Loving Thoughts,

My name is Connie Alexander. I am Terry's (Joe's Terry) sister. I would like your family to know how sorry I am for your loss and let you know you are in our prayers and thoughts. Terry loved your mom and had such a wonderful time visiting her and getting to know your family. I know she and Priscilla are sharing many "Joe stories" as I write this! Terry told me what a wonderful, kind person she was and wanted to be able to visit with her again at a later date. Little did she know it would be a month between their deaths that they would have an eternity to visit.
