Virgil Gonsalves, Jr.
September 5, 1931 ~ October 20, 2008
SALINAS – Virgil Gonsalves Jr was born in Monterey and died in Salinas.
Virgil attended grade school and high school in Monterey. He graduated from San Francisco State College. A well known jazz musician, Virgil organized his own jazz sextet and The Virgil Gonsalves Big Band.
Virgil was the hometown band at the Monterey Jazz Festival in the early years. He recorded several albums such as "Jazz at Monterey" and worked with Woody Hermans Band, Dizzy Gillespie, Mike Bloomfield and the Electric Flag, Jimmy Hendrix and many others. His life was his music and his friends and family.
Virgil is survived by his mother, Mary Gonsalves of Carson City; sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Wes Ball of Carson City; nephew, Tom and Helen Ball of Auburn; nephew, Steve and Jocelyn Ball of Salinas; and niece, Julie Ball of Placerville and many family members and friends from around the country.
