Philip Frey Obituary

Philip Wayne Frey
March 13, 1950 - Oct. 5, 2016
Resident of Monterey
Philip Wayne Frey was born on March 13, 1950 in Lodi, California and passed away suddenly in his home on October 5, 2016 in Monterey, California. His enduring passions for family, church, history, the music of Bach, creative cooking, Rosenthal china, fine but affordable art, and wine all came in time. Throughout, he was always true to himself and shared his appreciation for life, critical thought, and political fervor with all he encountered.
Born to parents Evanda and Reuben, Phil graduated valedictorian of Lodi High School, where he first met his future wife Jackie. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Stanford in European History where he studied on a National Merit Scholarship. After college, Phil married Jackie Uttke, also of Lodi, and attended graduate school at Yale, during which he studied German intellectual history in Bielefeld, Germany on a Fulbright Fellowship. While in graduate school, Phil and Jackie welcomed two beloved sons, Wil and Karl. Their two daughters, Merideth and Ann, followed a decade later while living in Gilroy, California where Phil long served as organist and vestry officer for St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Phil retired in 2006 from his management career in Silicon Valley and found his greatest fulfillment in his four children and twelve grandchildren. He filled his retirement with charitable work all around the Monterey Peninsula. He served admirably as senior warden and treasurer for St. Mary's Episcopal Church, did his best in the choir, and volunteered in many community ministries. Phil also worked on behalf of COPA, the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real, and the Monterey County Food Bank. Phil could always be depended on to serve as sage advisor and trusted confidant for his family, friends, and community.
Preceded in death by his father Reuben, and his brother Craig, he is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jackie; mother, Evanda; brother, Rod (Jorge); sister-in-law, Petere; four children and their spouses, Wil (Michelle), Karl (Frances), Merideth (Melvin), and Ann (Joshua); as well as twelve cherished grandchildren. A memorial service is to be held at St. Mary's By The Sea in Pacific Grove at noon on October 22nd, followed by a reception to celebrate Phil's life and the blessing that he was to all. We miss him and remain grateful for his love and example. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to make donations send them to St. Mary's By The Sea (Attn: Social Concerns Ministry), 146 Twelfth Street, Pacific Grove, CA 93950.

My condolences to Jackie and the rest of the Frey family at the passing of Philip. It has been nearly 50 years since Philip gave me a ride to attend a science club meeting at Lodi High. He was 3 years ahead of me and was a role model for me then. Although we shared similar academic backgrounds we both graduated from Lodi High (Philip was class of '68 and I was class of '71) and Stanford, our paths did not cross again after that science club meeting. I'm not surprised Philip lived his life with faith and intelligence. I hope your many warm memories of Philip help to comfort you in your time of loss.

Phil leaves a profound legacy of compassion, service, and dedication. A reliable and hardworking presence at St. Mary's, Phil demonstrated his faith and kindness quietly and admirably. I will remember him for his boundless generosity as a leader in multiple parish ministries and for his gentle, understated demeanor. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends: Phil's absence leaves a terrible void. May memories of his giving spirit sustain all who grieve.

Phil always left me moved and inspired after a conversation, and laughing, with something simple as directions for a hard boiled egg! It was a complete honor to worship with Phil and to work Antique Show with him. Phil lifted the playing field with commitment and integrity in doing Gods work.
Peace to Jackie and family...Matthew 11:28

Jackie and Ann

I did not know Phil well, but in my few interactions with him, I was struck by his unusual mix of gentleness and intensity, his kindness and his erudition.

I was surprised and saddened to learn of his sudden death. I am so sorry.

Jackie and family,
I'm saddened to hear of Phil's passing. Having known him from Kindergarten thru high school, I have thought of him often.
The full life that you described was enlightening and wonderful to see.
May God's hand comfort you all at this time.

Dear Phil,

You left us before your time and we will miss you. Thank you for all you did for us at St. Mary's. Always a pleasure to work with you. You were an inspiration to me and your selflessness was touching.

You may be gone, but never forgotten. I know you are at peace.

Your friend,

Phil was just a wonderful human being. I have known him at a very personal level for more than twenty years and through two parishes. He led by example and reasoned, without arguing, always willing to explain his point of view and seldom criticizing another's opinion. He was a very spiritual and correct man, a joy to work with and he will be greatly missed by me and many others.

Ann is a colleague and through her learnt about Phil. Phil' desire to serve others and be humble while at it, indicated to me of his noble nature. I hope we all embrace these noble attributes and live them.
