Iris M. Jewell

Iris M. Jewell of Millington, MD died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016 at her home. She was 86 years old. Iris was born in East Ham England, the daughter of the late Benjamin Maddison and Elizabeth “Larkin” Maddison. She grew up in London’s East End. In 1956 her family immigrated to Canada, and in 1959 the family moved to the United States. Iris has lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. Iris had many careers throughout her life. She was an LPN at Abington Hospital. The Jewell family was also influential in the pioneering of youth hockey in the Philadelphia area in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1972 they opened Wintersports Arena in Willow Grove. Iris was responsible for much of the day-to-day operations, including running the zambonie. She later became a travel agent for Garlin Travel, where she worked for many years and traveled all over the world. She was particularly fond of the Mediterranean, Morocco, and Israel. Iris was made friends wherever she went. She loved life. She was especially passionate about causes that benefit children. She was active in Kiwanis for over 21 years. Most recently she assisted with a mentoring homework program at St. Clements. She was also a member of PA Upper Bucks Kiwanis, St. Clements Episcopal Church in Massey, the Millington Lion’s Club and the Galena and Chestertown Book Club. Iris is survived by her daughter, Gay Leedie, and her sons, Mark and Paul Jewell, and by her five grandchildren: Allison Leedie, Erika Kennedy, Amber, Diana and Evan Jewell. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, as well as her niece, Lisa Hawker, grandnephews, John and Luke, sisters-in-law, Janet and Ronnie Maddison, and dear friends, Bonnie Houpt and Jill Kinney. A memorial service will be held at 12pm on Sunday, November 20th at St. Clements Episcopal Church in Massey, MD (http://www.saintclements.org/).
