Minor Hughes Obituary

Minor Hughes Jr. Minor Ivins Hughes Jr., known to family and friends as Skip, died peacefully Monday, July 4 2011 at the Pine Run Retirement Community in Doylestown, Pa. He was 75. The son of Minor I. Hughes Sr. and Anne (Johnson) Hughes, Skip was born in Trenton, N.J. He grew up in Hatboro, Pa., lived most of his adult life in Roosevelt, N.J. and Blue Bell, Pa., and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith C. Hughes. Skip attended Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration and spent his early professional career as hotel manager for the Nassau Inn in Princeton, N.J. and business manager for Systemedics, a medical billing company. He later became business manager of the Lansdale Medical Group and was instrumental in its growth during his 25 years there, after which he became director of physician relations at PennCare. An avid reader, regular theater-goer and lover of jazz and classical music, Skip cherished the works of S.J. Perelman, Vladimir Nabokov, Tom Stoppard, Stephen Sondheim, Dave Brubeck, Stan Kenton and Philip Glass. He read the New York Times religiously, laughed out loud at old Woody Allen movies and Seinfeld reruns, and loved bad puns and raw oysters. During his lifetime, he logged countless thousands of miles traveling to and from the family camp in the Adirondack Mountains to enjoy quiet time reading, cooking, splitting wood and fixing the dock (again). In addition to his wife, Skip is survived by his sister Rosemary Hughes of Hatboro, Pa.; three daughters, Sheila Hughes and her husband Peter of Seattle, Wa., Kathy Kibler and her husband Steve of Media, Pa,. and Colleen Hughes of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Minor "Mike" Hughes III and his wife Mary Helen of Doylestown, Pa., and David Hughes and his wife Ollie of Atlanta, Ga.; and seven grandchildren: Dylan, Ben, Anna, Bryn, Charlotte, Lauren and Hazel. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelly. The family will be holding a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to The Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and Adirondack Land Trust at P.O. Box 65, Keene Valley, NY 12943.
