Passed away peacefully on January 21, 2016 at the Verdun Hospital, at the age of 88. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 66 years, Arthur Smith, in August 2015. She will be forever missed by her children Patricia and Peter (Evangeline), by her grandchildren Natalie (Adam), Jesse (Ryan), Christina (Kerwin), Alexander (Holly) and by her great-grandchildren Kameron, Kellen, Kwynn and June. Born in 1927, she grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. She worked for Bell Canada and married Arthur in 1949 in Ottawa. They raised their children in Lachine, Quebec. Doreen and Arthur moved to New Jersey with Arthur's job. Doreen and Arthur spent their retirement years in North Carolina enjoying many travels and playing golf and returned to Canada in 2009 to be near family. Throughout her years, our mother dedicated herself to several volunteering activities, particularly with Girl Guides and the church. She later developed an interest in antique buttons and put together an amazing collection. She lived a full life as a devoted wife, and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren and in her later years enjoyed immensely the company of her three Montreal area great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the dedicated staff of the Emergency department and 5th floor of the Verdun Hospital for the compassionate care they provided to our mother. A reception will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. with a commemorative service starting at 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the Cancer Research Society of Canada.
