REUSCH, Astri
1945 - 2016
Died at her home in Montreal in peace and serenity on April 24, 2016, in the company of her husband Sam Stein after a long struggle with cancer. Astri was a respected artist whose works in glass have been exhibited at major museums throughout the world and installed in numerous public venues and whose large-scale sculpture, La Débâcle, is integrated into the entrance hall of the Musée de la Civilisation in Québec City. She leaves behind her bereaved husband of 50 years, Sam Stein, her sister Anik Lopez, her in-laws George Stein (Susan), Fred Stein (Sue), Ada Mae Crouse (Irvin) and her many relatives and friends and her colleagues in the art world. She will be missed for her intelligence, charm, talent, wit, humour, sensitivity, helpfulness, courage, beauty and honesty by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

'COUSINE': La chaleur et la franchise dans notre correspondance par courriel ces dernières années m'ont profondément touchée. Et puis, tu reconnaissais la dévotion et la force mentale de ton Sam à travers cette période si difficile de ta santé. On ne t'oubliera jamais....

good night dear ASTRI ... we'll get together again, promise me that you will make me one of your gin/vodka (or whatever was hidden in your freezer) and freshly squeezed lemon drinks, on the ice again ... nobody did it better

your kentucky derby drinks with all the fresh mint from your garden made us feel as if we were in the blue grass state ... and i'd get you to snicker when i sang: ... MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME, 'Tis summer, the people are GAY? i must of hit that last note a little too high ;-)

thank you for drying my tears when i had a difficult time a few years ago

letting us enjoy your garden and your home on our 23rd anniversary

your painting titled COCONUTS will always be treasured ... always will be loved

thank you for attending our little black & white affair and for the generous wedding gift which you said was for our honeymoon in paris !!! and also thank you for signing the papers as one of our witnesses to that amazing time

and yes, december 31, 1999 at your lovely home for drinks before the clock turned mid-night was a very good time

and when we left quebec for nova scotia in 2014, that amazing breakfast you & sam prepared for richard and i was way OVER THE TOP ... salmon never tasted so good delicious

thank you for never forgetting my birthday

you described me so perfectly that your words will be on my headstone to be enjoyed by my people in the valley of the chiefs (lodge grass, montana) one day ... something to do with me just being the right amount of naughty and nice ;-)

there are so many more memories that make me smile ... some i will just keep for me

i can't believe you are gone ... i just can't believe it ... what a privilege it was for me to be your girl-friend ...

enormously, from my heart, tears flowing, I THANK YOU for giving me such pleasure in life ... i will always love you astri

I met Astri Reusch in the eighties designing the interiors of suburban office buildings in Montréal. I convinced developers to install art pieces in the lobbies of their new buildings, thus encouraging local artists.

By contacting the cultural department of the government of Québec, I met Maurice Achar who showed me the creations of a few Québec artists so that I could organize a small competition between three selected artists. They each presented a "maquette" of their proposal for the various projects we designed.

Astri won 3 of the competitions and designed one glass and metal scultpture for one lobby and 2 glass panels for two others.

While I determined the location and basic mediums of the art pieces, Astri had "carte blanche" to integrate the art pieces in the spaces allocated and created unique and original art pieces that are still being enjoyed today as office workers walk thru the lobbies and elevator hall ways on their way to their work spaces.

I remember visiting her while she was building "La Debacle" at the Musee de la Civilisation in Quebec city and being amazed to see this "petite" woman managing to organize the installation of massive concrete pieces representing large chunks of ice in her art piece and handling construction workers like a pro with tact and diplomacy.

She was a pleasure to work with and thru the years, my husband (Duane Kindness) and I became friends and managed to keep in touch to this day. We often stopped by her residence and studio and were always excited to glimpse at the projects she was working on. It was a visual treat to spend time with her.

In her spare time, Astri also had a green thumb. She grew the largest mother-in-laws tongue plants I have ever seen and her back outdoor garden which was a surprising oasis in downtown Montréal.

We had a Guesthouse at that time and invited Astri & Sam to many of our little gatherings and were delighted she chose to come. She was one of our guests at our Civil Union which took place at le Écomusée du fier monde in 2003. She graciously signed as a witness to the event. We were so honored.

During the past few years, life got in the way of seeing her in person. Nevertheless, we kept in touch with facebook and emails. We have 4 rescue dogs and she asked us to also send news and photographs about them as well.

I will always remember her brilliance, creativity, gracefulness, smile, friendship and her wonderful spirit.

I was blessed to know her and will cherish her memory until we meet again in the next life...

I am so sad to hear of Astri's passing. She was a beautiful spirit and soul, kind and loving, and oh, so talented. My deepest sympathies to her loving husband, Sam. Astri, may you rest in peace and give us strength and courage from up above. The angels are blessed to have you among them. In my heart.
