Ray BAILLIE Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on May 16, 2015.

BAILLIE, Ray
February 14, 1935 - May 10, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing, after a fall, of Ray Baillie, son of the late Donald and Mary Baillie. This extraordinary family man will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend Diana (nee Palmer), his children, Patrick (Tasha), Megan (Mike), and Nick (Larissa) and his twin brother Charlie (Alyce). Predeceased by his brothers Dave and Tom, he will also be missed by his extended family and many friends.
A descendant of Scottish, Irish and French immigrants, he was born and raised in Montreal and spent a lifetime of summers at his beloved Magog. He attended Ohio State University, Sir George Williams College (B.A., 1959), Edinburgh University, Macdonald College (teacher's diploma), and McGill University (M.A., History, 1966).
Ray had 3 careers: As an athlete he competed in amateur weightlifting and won the Eastern States Championship, Heavyweight class, in 1957. A defensive lineman, he went on to play 91 games over nine seasons in the Canadian Football League, with Calgary (1954-55), Montreal (1956-57, 1960-61, 1965), Hamilton (1957) and Edmonton (1962-63). He went on to coach football, leading the Ville-Émard Rams to the 1958 Juvenile Championship, and for several years coached the Chomedey Chiefs, who won the Senior High School Championship in 1970. He then joined his brother Charlie with the McGill Redmen as the Defensive Coordinator. In 1973, they won the Quebec championship and advanced to the Vanier Cup final.
His primary career was as a teacher in which he was a great inspiration to, and greatly respected by his many colleagues and students over a span of nearly 40 years–most notably at Chomedey Polyvalent High School in Laval, where he taught history and established a history resource archive centre and the debating club. He also taught at McGill's Faculty of Education.
After his retirement in 1994, he embarked on a ten-year project with his wife Diana, travelling throughout Quebec gathering information and photographing for a series of books entitled Imprints: Discovering The Historic Face of English Quebec. Ray later published Scottish Imprints in Quebec.
The family would like to thank Dr. Francis Bernard and the staff of the ICU at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal for their compassion and care.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 19th, 2015 at the
Mount Royal Funeral Complex

Dear Diana, Patrick, Megan, Nick, and Charlie, just found out about Ray yesterday. Our deepest condolences. So glad we were able to make it last year to the big celebration. Can still see Ray standing on the porch at Belle's giving us a history lesson of grandfather Bishop and the people who owned the property prior to the Bishops. Please take care. Bev Bishop

Dear Diana,Patrick,Megan,Nick and Charlie.
Ray Baillie was an incredible Human Being. One that only comes along once in a Lifetime.
My deepest sympathies for your loss.
Ray had a tremendous impact on my life. I learned many of life's disciplines from him. Barely a day would go by without my thinking of him. He was an outstanding Mentor, Coach and Friend. My days playing football under his tutorship are memories that I hold dearly in my heart. He touched and influenced so many lives. My heart goes out to you and all who new him. We have lost a Great man.

To Charlie and the Ballie Family,
I remember Ray when he was attending The Ohio State University in 1956. Everyday, around 5 o'clock, I used to see this husky guy walking slowly up from the Ohio Stadium where he was a member of the weight lifting club.
I'm sorry I never stopped him for I too was originally from Montreal and was playing hockey with his brother Charlie at Ohio State. After Ohio State I never met the two brothers again - life got in the way!
Please accept my condolences and may our Lord comfort the Ballie Family.

Thank you for lending him to so many people over the years, and especially to the students of Chomedey Polyvalent like myself who were forever altered and shaped by not only his vision and lessons, but by his character. I cared for him very much, and sincerely wish you solace despite your grief, and strength from the many wonderful memories you hold.

I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Baillie and her three children whom I did not ever meet and also to Coach Charlie Baillie. I am deeply saddened by the news of Coach Baillie's passing. Like many, I knew him as Coach, but admired him greatly. His quiet demeanor commanded respect because of his husky physical presence and his successful tenure in professional football. I cannot ever recall him raising his voice. He did not have to. His physical presence, the deep stare from his eyes and his deep voice were enough to get one's attention and respect. I remember him demonstrating techniques on the field and pointing out formations on the videotape machines. Back in the 1970's, taping/ filming of games for review prior to practice was a very new technology and most of us did not know how to use the information effectively. I can remember Coach Baillie taking tapes home with him after games on Saturday to review over the weekend for debriefing session on Mondays and Tuesdays. I also can remember him biting on the eraser at the end of his pencil when he was deep in thought at meetings. When he gave advice, we all listened. He was also present at times during the off season to review weight training. He stressed things that we needed to know; like bench presses are to be done at shoulder width and not the more popular wider width, at the time - because shoulder width gives a football player more strength from the pushing position. His was a man of many talents, a Renaissance man of his time. I am thankful for the things learned from him.

Always enjoyed our sometime heated chats regarding history and pedagogy in the Faculty Lounge of the Faculty of Education at McGill. Ray was a wonderful teacher who brought passion and respect to his classroom.

To the Baillie family and brother Charlie, Ray was one of the most highly regarded teachers in the Laurenval School Board. He touched many young students and lit many fires of interest in history and politics in their minds and hearts.

Ray Baillie taught me how to throw a football and the importance of thinking before speaking. I have never been more proud of being a Chomedey High alumnus than when I recall the enduring lessons learned in World History class, in the Debating Society, at the Baillie barbecue or at his Bailliewick in Magog. A gentle giant of a man as much in harmony with nature as with people, a father figure to many and a paragon of hard work. They don't make men like Ray Baillie anymore but he will be remembered evermore. I raise a glass of Scotch in his honour and offer my sincere sympathies to his family.

I am writing to offer my condolences to the Baillie family. I was a student in his phys. ed class at Hillcrest elementary school in chomedey for his last year there and we were the students who gave him a signed oversized running shoe. I was then lucky enough to take an enriched history course with him in Chomedey High. In retrospect, I can see it was my introduction to a genuinely inspiring educational experience. It was more like a college course than a high school course and Mr. Baillie, as I knew him, taught me and the others to think for ourselves and explore our relationship with history in a personal way. I hated high school but I loved this class and have always thought fondly of it and Ray Baillie. I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Baillie Family
My deepest condolences to you in the sudden loss of Ray. It was a true privilege to have had Ray as both a teacher and coach those years at Chomedey culminating in the 1970 championship team.
He took a bunch of boys, both in the class and on the field, and taught us the values we needed to truly become young men .teamwork, sacrifice, self-confidence, determination to name but a few. Over the years, I have frequently recalled and been aided by the lessons that Ray taught with a soft word, the determined fire in his eye and of course that giant smile and hearty laugh.
His memory will live on, in the many of us whose lives he touched so profoundly.

Ray Baillie was an exceptional individual who I had the pleasure to know as a student and as a Commissioner with the School Board. Words cannot express the effect he had all of us who had the pleasure to interact with him. I always enjoyed history but he just made it better. May he rest in peace. My sincerest condolences from someone who he left a lasting impression on.

My deepest condolences to the family of Ray Baillie in your time of loss. I hope that you can take comfort in the fact that his life touched so many others and he had a profound and lasting impact. I played for Coach Baillie in my last year of high school. Unlike some of the other players who are paying tribute here, I had very little talent for the game and the coach knew it but that didn't stop him for playing me. He rewarded excellence but he also rewarded ordinary hard work and he instilled values of that hard work as well as discipline, execution, teamwork and determination, values I carry forward to this day. I am thankful that I was abl to know him for that brief time.

Dear Baillie Family:

To Diana,Patrick,Megan and Nick
I would like to extend my sincere condolences to you on the passing of a great man. He touched my life in many ways, as a football player and as a person. He was the greatest coach I ever played for. I knew he was very proud of his Chomedey Chiefs. When I saw him a couple of years ago we talked about those great years and you could see it in his eyes how proud he was of the times he was the coach of the Chiefs. I will truly miss him.

Respectfully,

Dear Baillie family
I was the Chomedey Chiefs right end from grade 8 - 11 and Mr Baillie was a coach that showed boys from such different backgrounds how to work as a team. At a team reunion he showed a 8mm film. One clip showed offensive line moving off the line and I am closest to the camera.I happened to have nailed the timing and was first to hit the defense man. When Mr. Baillie said
'That's how you block" it wasn't about favourites. It was a lesson from a great teacher. I will always remember Mr. Baillie and his lessons I learned. Issie Chackowicz

Charlie and Diana,
Very sorry to hear about the unexpected passing of Ray. I first met this great person when we were both history teachers and rival football coaches in the late 60s. Then a few years later we coached together, with Charlie and Bill McKenna at McGill. And enjoyed wonderfull times together. As we are now in France, and won't be returning home for a couple of days , I will get in touch with you after we return, Charlie.
May he rest in peace,
