I spent a semester with Trevor Phillips when our group from BGSU studied abroad at UEA in Norwich. Being the only education major in the group, Dr. Phillips made sure I was exposed to as many opportunities as possible. It was truly life-changing. Every once in a while, someone comes along who impacts your life in a way that it causes you to impact the lives of others. This was Dr. Trevor Phillips to me. He took the time to educate, truly educate, me into looking outside myself to the world around me. I am forever changed as a result of having known him. My sincere condolences to the entire family.

My prayers are with all of the family. It has been over 40 years since we were neighbors in BG., and I have never forgotten all of you. Trevor and Lois were always gracious and welcoming whenever I came over to visit friend David. My best to Janice and Nancy as well.
I miss you all and wish you peace with your loss.

I just saw the notice of Trevor's death in the BGSU alum magazine. I am writing to offer my condolences to Lois and the children and their children. Trevor was a gracious and adventurous and imaginative educator. He gave a resounding YES to my request to teach what was the first women's studies course at BGSU in the Experimental College he headed up. He encouraged me to write about it and my first academic publication emerged from his encouraging suggestion. He was a good man with a great heart and a lovely mind and the world is a better place for him having been a part of it.

Dear Lois and Family,
I just received my summer issue of BGSU Alumni Magazine and my heart fell when I read of Trevor's passing.
Dr. Phillips sent me on my first trip abroad in January 1974 when I signed up for an independent studies program in England.
I traveled the country for 2 months, staying a week with Trevor's colleague and friend, Stan Irving, in Nottingham.
That experience changed my life. I realized then that I was a child of the world, not just Bowling Green, Ohio. The trip not only boosted my confidence but made me yearn for even more adventures with people and cultures worldwide.
In the ensuing years, I have traveled to 43 countries. My husband and I travel as much as we can on our own and have also chaparoned students on trips abroad.
Our current retirement "gig" is escorting senior citizens on trips all over the world.
I owe so much thanks to Trevor and I truly regret that I never got in touch with him to tell him so.
But now you all know another way that he impacted a young woman's life.
My sincere condolences,
Donna Fulk Jackson

I have only just heard the sad news and I offer my condolences to Lois and the family. Trevor left a huge impression on me and my fellow student at LTM
We were fortunate enough to be his very first class and he brought an enthusiasm and fresh approach to every day. He was able to make us feel excited to learn and anxious to succeed. Some of these classmates were lucky enough to reconnect with Trevor and Lois a few years ago and enjoyed an afternoon together in Toronto. My best wishes to you Lois. We will always remember Trevor

I remember the last time I saw Uncle Trevor was in Zurich about 7 years ago and it has always been a shame that we ave lived so far apart. I spent a summer with the family in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1975 and that was an amazing holiday. Its a shame that we could not have spent more quality time and holidays together.
My love goes out to Lois, David, Janis and Nancy and I hope that we can all stay in touch and plan to see more of each other. It was great to see Janis & Jordan in San Francisco recently and we really need to do it more often.
Lots of love, Simon Phillips

I adored my Uncle Trevor. As my brother Keith wrote, we didn't see each other very often, but I always felt close to him.
I am just so grateful that I had the chance to see him one last time in August, just 7 months before he died. It was literally a flying visit, just 36 hours together, but it was precious in every way. I will treasure those memories for ever.
My deepest condolences to Auntie Lois, David, Janis and Nancy and their families. I really hope we see each other again sometime soon.
Rest in Peace, Uncle Trevor, and know that I will never forget you.
Sharon and all the family

Uncle Trevor was special in every way and although we saw far too little of each other the memories will last forever. Having him siting next to me in Zurich at my son Jason's BarMitzvah in 2008 was a very special moment. To Auntie Lois, David, Janis and Nancy we send our deepest condolences and love at this difficult time. I do believe that Trevor and his brother (my father) are reunited. With our love Keith, Louise, Katie & Jason xxx

I was the proud wife of Trevor's only brother William (known as Bill), and although we lived so far apart we managed to maintain a wonderful relationship with Trevor and Lois, throughout the years. With three children each, we had some exciting times together in the early periods of family-building and went on to have trips both in England and in America / Canada as a foursome, which feature among my best memories. Bill sadly died more than 11 years ago, and now our lovely Trevor too. It would be great to believe the brothers are together again. Sadly we don't know .... but I live on in hope.
My love accompanies these words to my dearest sister-in-law, to David, Janis and Nancy and to their loved ones. From Naomi

Dear Mrs. Phillips and Family,
I felt a shiver and sensed my eyes moisten as I became aware of your loss. Moments ago I returned from a conference to open and read an email from my closest college friend, with the subject line "Trevor Phillips". What a gentleman. What an EDUCATOR.
I am an IPCO (speech communication) graduate of BGSU 1981, and had the honor of having Dr. Phillips for educational philosophy. Currently, in my 25th year as a Professor of Communication Studies and Director of the Honors College at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, I can say without hesitation, Dr. Phillips remains one of the most influential forces in shaping my vocational life. Through a demand for academic excellence, a quick wit, an ability to see potential in his students, and a willingness to extend the gift of time to enlighten students about the potential he sensed, Trevor Phillips opened minds and shaped those around him.
I will never forget the day he passed back our first class assignment, announcing, "I would like the following four students to see me after class", my name being one. In my first quarter, having transferred as a junior to BGSU from a small college in West Virginia, I felt my heart pound----what had I done wrong? Standing by his desk as most of my peers existed the room, he turned to the four of us and said, "Yes, now then, you four......smashing job on your papers, thought you all should be certain to know each other." You could feel a collective sigh from each of us as he slightly grinned and, with his wonderful accent quipped, "you thought you might be in trouble, huh?".
I don't recall much of what I read over 35 years ago or many lectures, but I do recall the innovation and passion he brought into each class session. He challenged just about every thought I had about education causing deep reflection and critical thinking. Through what some would consider unorthodox approaches, such as pedagogical methods championed in one of his required texts A.S. Neill's Summerhill, Dr. Phillips inspired us to embrace the rich diversity of educational thought----long before "diversity" became the national trend.
What I have taken most, however, and what I share with my students---is Dr. Phillips' preference...........indeed passion..........for education over teaching and vocation over job. "Teaching reduces what we do to little more than mechanics," he would say, "where educators motivate and inspire!". "Don't settle for a job," he would challenge us, "seek a vocation!"
Your husband, father, grandfather engendered respect and admiration from those of us fortunate enough to have called him professor. I am certain your memories will remain vivid in your hearts and minds.
With sympathy and admiration, Dr. Kevin W. Dean (Princeton, NJ)

Because I am from the Bowling Green, Ohio, area originally and was home visiting my dad, I happened to pick up the paper and saw that Trevor had passed. I was a student of Trevor's at BGSU many, many years ago. While I'm sure he wouldn't have remembered me, I certainly remembered him and his wonderful class on educational philosophy. He was intelligent, funny, and kind. Today, I am a college professor myself, albeit in a different discipline, but I still recall with fondness Trevor's ability to make his students think. I'm sure his lasting influence is felt by many others, as well.

Dear Lois and family, We were sad to hear of Trevor's passing. You were both valued members of the BGSU community and you are both missed. Your assistance with the Journal of Secondary Education was invaluable. We couldn't have published it without you. Trevor's assistance on the editorial board helped us maintain a high standard of excellence. David made it possible for Jo to complete her dissertation filming project. She remembers the snow storms interrupting the schedule but everyone managed to change days and finish it. We extend our sincere condolences and wish you all health and healing. Bill and Jo Reynolds

Trevor was my professor during the days of Summerhill, and later when I became a teacher in Bowling Green, I gladly incorporated some of the educational philosophy from his course into my classes. He was so vibrant and fascinating and was always enthusiastic about life and what might lie ahead. My blessings to the family. Please know that Trevor made a difference in my life!

So fondly remembered; enjoyed the Philosophy of Education course experienced in 1979. Dr. Phillips' encouraged us to have open minds and understanding dispositions. He taught by example. I'll forever remember and cherish time in his classes. Susan Simpson, (Bowling Green, Oh)

Please accept my sympathy during this difficult time. Trevor was such a major part of so many lives - a true gentleman. He could play the stuffy Englishman and vivacious Canadian. Lots of love to you Lois. Jackie Stitt Osborne
