John FETHERSTONHAUGH Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette from Apr. 19 to Apr. 23, 2014.
FETHERSTONHAUGH, John
John Anthony Barry Fetherstonhaugh died peacefully on April 15, 2014 at the age of 87.
He was the son of Harold Lea Fetherstonhaugh and Edith Marjorie Scott. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Catherine Anne (nee Notman) and predeceased by his sister Mary Lea. John was father to Timothy Keith Edward (died 1953), Robert Barry of Montreal, John Brian of New York, and Catherine Lea Graham of Ottawa. John was a lawyer, prosecutor, lecturer, historian, proud veteran and enthusiastic supporter of many diverse causes.
He was born, lived and died in Montreal, the city he adored. He grew up in Westmount where he attended Selwyn House and Westmount High. He graduated with a BCL from McGill University, completing his final year in French at Laval University in Quebec City. He went on to receive his Masters of Law (LLM in labour law) from Harvard University. His law career spanned more than 35 years. He served as Secretary of the Bar of Montreal in the mid 1960's and was a founding director of the Legal Aid Bureau of the Bar of Montreal. He was named the English representative to revise the Quebec Civil Code of Procedure. In 1965, he was appointed a Queen's Counsel (QC).
He served as Prosecutor of both the Westmount and Dorval municipal courts.
During high school John signed up as a wartime artillery volunteer. He trained at Camp Petawawa and became a bombardier instructor. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery 51st Regiment, and rose to the rank of Captain in the militia.
John was an advocate for many causes, including aviation safety, veterans' affairs, prisoners' rights (President of John Howard Society), seniors' care (President of St Margaret's Home), Haiti earthquake relief, and land mine control. He was very proud to represent Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union and even joined their picket lines. John was active in politics for over seven decades. He travelled to the former Yugoslavia in 1947 as a representative of the McGill Young Liberals. He was copy editor for the McGill Daily. John ran for the Liberal Party nomination to Parliament in the 1960's and again in the 70's. A resident of Dorval for over 55 years, John served as the President of the Dorval Municipal Association, was a founding director of the Dorval Library, and an active member of the Dorval Historical Society.
John's greatest ambition in his own words was to "leave the world a better place for my grandchildren." He was the beloved Gramps to Julie, Laura, David, Claire, Alison, Alexander, and Brian, and step-grandfather to Brittany and Alex. He was much loved by Christine Zufelt, Christine Kofler, John Graham, Heidi Edwards and many friends and family the world over. A special thanks goes to Diane Boyer and the team at the Ste. Anne's Veteran's Hospital Liaison Centre who provided extraordinary support, companionship and care for John over the past several years.
Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel at JJ Cardinal, 560 Bord du Lac in Dorval, Quebec at 4 p.m. on Saturday April 26, 2014. A Reception will follow at the same location.

Mrs. Fetherstonhaugh, I just learned from Rob that his father had passed away. When I visited Dorval 3 years ago, it was a highlight of my trip to be able to say hello to you at the house on Berkley Crescent.

I always knew your husband had an accomplished career, but the range of his interests and achievements were truly astounding. First amongst them, of course, is the example he and you have left with your children. Their lives and contributions are the best tribute to both you and John.

From a neighbour and friend just a few doors away many years ago, my sincere condolences.

Cathy,
I hadn't seen John since the early forties when we were at Selwyn House at the same time, although he was a year or two ahead of me. I have a clear memory of him ... tall, slim, thick hair, and seemingly very intelligent.

Do you remember me? We went to Miss Edwards' dancing classes together and later skied at the Shawbridge Club. We never really got to know each other very well, but I remember you very clearly. I knew your brother Bill pretty well, and I have a clear memory of your Father, who always seemed to be very jovial and in a good humour. I enjoyed meeting him very much.

I offer you my most sincere sympathy in John's death. But he had a long and very fulfilling and rewarding life, and was surely an ornament to his family, society and many friends and admirers. Take great comfort in that.

Please accept my warmest wishes, Cathy. It's very nice to be reminded of you, from what now seems to be so far back. All our memories are happy.
Affectionately, Geoff Lehman.

I am grateful for John's assistance with my patent application in 1986. While the invention was never a commercial success, at least both our names are permanently enshrined in the Library of Congress. A donation has been made in his memory to the Ste-Anne's Hospital foundation.

The sad news of the passing of John Fetherstonhaugh has reflected great loss to the greater Montreal community and to international communities.

My late husband, Kalman Samuels QC, was a colleague, confrere and admirer of the late John Fetherstonhaugh. Their careers were to some degree paralleled both studying Law at McGill and completed law studies at Laval University. Both received the Queens Council (QC) award and both were involved in the political arena on behalf of the Liberal Party.

May you find comfort in the recognition and memory of a significant accomplished life which has accorded so many benefits to the world around him.

Sincerely,

Stella Samuels

Can think of no finer man that Mr. Fether...loved to talk with him about our favourite topic; history...beginning with WW2, then over the years Cathie and I were together and I studied history at McGill...interwar and WW1 history. Many of the the words he spoke at the time about so many topics only resonated as the years went by.
I also want to extend my deepest condolences to Mrs Fether...I know John's idiosyncrasies were not always the easiest to deal with...and you were ALWAYS there for him and all your kids; I have only the best memories of you. Rob, Brian, my thoughts are with you and your family...and of course Cathie, John and all the Graham's...I'll be thinking of you all.
