Sylvia ARY Obituary
The distinguished Montreal artist Sylvia Ary left us on Sunday, November 8. Predeceased by her husband Solomon Ary, and her brother the eminent scholar Dr. Sacvan Bercovitch. She is survived by her sister Ninel, her loving children, Raquel, Malka, Isaac and Alexander, and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sylvia was the daughter of the great Russian Expressionist painter Alexander Bercovitch and the Yiddish journalist and political activist Bryna Avrutick. Born in Moscow in 1923, she came to Montreal in 1926 and grew up in a heady atmosphere of poverty, political passion, art and great literature. Fluent in Yiddish, Russian and English, she had the genius to paint what she saw and what she imagined. At the age of fourteen, she won a major prize to study art in Paris. Sylvia lived a rich and full creative life and her works in collections both public and private are her monuments. Her cremation was private and took place in Montreal on November 10. A memorial service is planned for the Spring.

I will miss dear Sylvia greatly. Sorry she was unable to see me when I visited the last time.
