W.J. Richmond Obituary

W.J. "Dub" Richmond was born at his paternal grandparent's home in Blanket, Texas, on February 15, 1928. He grew up the only child of Macon and Dona Richmond, both of whom preceded Dub in death. He spent his first 16 years attending Blanket schools, then matriculated to Tarleton State University in 1944, and continued on to Texas A&M, where he majored in Civil Engineering. His higher education was interrupted by a call from the United States Army, where he served with "D" Co. 4th Engineering Battalion in Germany. He returned from Germany in 1952 with the rank of Master Sergeant and continued to serve in the Reserves. He was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army in 1956. In 1953, he married Brockie McCasland, who he met on a blind date in Abilene, Texas. To that union was born two children, Melissa and Steven. Dub spent his working years with Humble Oil & Refining, subsequently Exxon, as a land surveyor. Dub was passionate about land surveying and held surveying licenses and registrations in several states. He served several terms in various positions on the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying. In the late 60's and early 70's, Dub worked for ARCO, surveying for the fledgling Alaskan oil industry in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and was later involved in the trans-Alaskan pipeline project. He retired from Exxon in 1985 to spend his time traveling with Brockie, visiting his family ranches in Brown and Brewster counties, and enjoying his grandchildren. Dub thoroughly loved all things outdoors, including firearms, hunting, and fishing. He nurtured and passed these passions along to his children and grandchildren. He had a deep seated love of Texas history and could recite endless interesting stories about people, places, and events that occurred all over West Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Macon and Dona Richmond; and Brockie, his wife of 50 years. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa, her husband Gary, and their daughters Renee' and Jennifer of Montgomery, Texas; his son, Steven, and his wife, Susan of Georgetown, Texas.; his "brother," second cousin Jule Richmond, his wife LaNita, and their sons Cade and Cody Richmond, and daughter, Wendey Lesley, all of Brown and Comanche Counties, Texas. Visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday October 14, 2015 at Ellis Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday October 15, 2015 at Golf Course Road Church of Christ with Tim Baugh officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Dub and I traveled the roads of west Texas and New Mexico more miles than I can recall but they were always interesting and educational for a young sprout like me. I often think back to one particular day on the road. It started with Dub picking me up at 0500 the on to Carlsbad, NM to stake a wildcat. Next to an oilfield south of Lubbock to stake another wildcat and finally to Noodle Dome Road northeast of Trent, Texas to stake two wells. I remember getting back home about 2200 that evening. I learned many things working with Dub that share with young surveyors working with me over the years since. He was a mentor that I miss often. It was a learning experience every day of working with Dub. God Bless his soul.

I knew Dub well, he would always come by my surveying office in Comanche and visit me and we talked surveying lingo when he was in town and sometimes he would tell me where he found some original survey corners on his places at blanket, give me maps he had made and I respected him as a good surveyor with a lot of passion for the surveying profession. I will miss his visits.
Rest in peace Dub.

I believe Dub was a mentor to many surveyors, myself included. He held a strong passion for the profession of surveying as well as for the history of surveying. It was a true honor to have known him. I extend my sincere condolences to his family and the message that Dub was truly respected.

You don't know me, but when I saw the OB in the MRT I wanted to extend my sympathy for you and your family. Your dad, was in my dad's survey party at Humble. My dad died in 1969, but he (Van D. Meisenheimer) mentioned Dub often. Sometime in the future I would like to visit with you. I am 75 and live in Midland. Gretchen Meisenheimer Keng

Dub and my father, Max Schumann, would always joke around when he came in for information. I enjoyed getting to know him. I know that he and Dad will be surveying heaven for all of us to follow. He was a wonderful man and I am grateful to have known him. God bless you all.

My condolences to Dub's family and his countless friends. I will always cherish the wisdom he imparted to me while driving the many, many miles we travelled together on west Texas and southeast New Mexico highways together performing our duties as Surveyors. He was a mentor and friend to everyone he touched and will be greatly missed.
