Phyllis L. Chappell

Phyllis L. Chappell, 86, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 in Abilene, Texas. Born in El Paso, Texas on February 19, 1931, Phyllis was the daughter of Velma (Swindler) and Amos Arnett. It is said that Phyllis earned four degrees, two from McMurry University, one from Midwestern State University, and one from UT Permian Basin. She was a retired law office manager. A prominent District Judge once told her, "Phyllis, you are getting dangerously close to practicing law without a license." Phyllis had many interests and pastimes. A great lover of animals, there was never an animal she would not aid if in need. She loved the outdoors. Phyllis was a member of Cree Meadows Country Club and an avid golfer. She enjoyed working on her cabin in Ruidoso. Phyllis was also the West Texas Cattle Queen, once having a herd of over 100 cows, each and every one having a first name. She was also an avid follower of McMurry University Basketball. She had a great love for travel and cruises, and especially loved the Island of Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Chappell; son, Robert "Bobby" Chappell, Jr.; and daughter, Cathy Binns. Phyllis is survived by two sons, John E. Chappell and wife Carol of Abilene, and James Chappell of Midland; six grandchildren, Aimee, William, and Chelsea of Midland, and Coby, Cole, and Cutter of Abilene; and four great-grandchildren, Konway, Lawson, Cason, and Landry. Phyllis is also survived by her faithful companion and protector, her beloved Brittany Spaniel, Freckles. The private interment was in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
