Thomas Purtell Obituary
AGE: 81 ? Basking Ridge
Thomas D. Purtell died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011. Mr. Purtell was born in Binghampton, NY and resided in Somerset, NJ for 25 years before moving to Basking Ridge in 1997. He retired as the Distribution Manager for Leviton Manufacturing Co., Long Island, NY and had been a retired Major in the US Air Force Reserves after serving active duty as a veteran of the Korean War. A graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, NY, he received his BA degree from Manhattan College, NY. Mr. Purtell was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann Purtell; a son, Thomas Patrick Purtell; a daughter, Linda Carol Purtell and a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole. His sister, Mary Alice Markel had predeceased him in 1972.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Friday, February 11 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville. Interment to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh, NY. Visiting hours from 6pm to 9pm on Thursday, February 10 at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to Macular Degeneration Research, 22152 Gateway Center Drv., Clarksburg, MD 20871.

I had the pleasure of working with Tom during the 1980's at Leviton. He was a wonderful individual and will be greatly missed by his colleagues. I will always remember him fondly. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

My heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your husband, father and friend. He was a wonderful role model and maybe the best that can be said of another human being -- a simple man. Simple in the fact that he embraced good honest values and cherished both his family and friends. He touched many lives in his life and heaven is now one soul richer in his presence. The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me".
