Rosemary Hyde Obituary

Rosemary Hyde

Wayland, MA - Rosemary Crampton Fahrner Hyde, of Wayland, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on January 7, 2018 at the home of her daughter Karen, after a long illness.

Rosemary was born September 19, 1919 to Stewart and Grace (Stoney) Crampton of New Rochelle, NY. She was a graduate of Smith College with a major in Music, and attended the Juilliard School for piano and voice training.

Rosemary went on to a long and distinguished career in music, introducing and teaching music to thousands of students. In addition to teaching in Cambridge, MA, Shreveport, LA, Wilmington, DE, and Louisville, KY, she had a long career teaching music in the North Plainfield, NJ school system. She was a member of the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, the Music Educators Association, and served as president of the Plainfield Music Club.

In addition to her devotion to music, Rosemary loved the outdoors and was especially fond of hiking, playing golf, canoeing, and gardening. After retirement from teaching, Rosemary remained active in hiking clubs, music clubs, and volunteer activities at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and various historical societies and museums in NJ. She also continued to teach piano and provide adult literacy and music education. She especially loved summers at Blue Mountain Lake and exploring the Adirondack Park, making many summer friends there.

Rosemary is survived by her children Karen Fahrner, David Fahrner and his wife Debbie Fahrner, David Hyde and his wife Flora, three nieces, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hyde was my piano teacher many years ago. I learned so much from her and still remember her telling me to read the notes don't just play it by ear. She was a truly talented individual.

My deepest condolences she will be missed.

Rosemary was such a strong, intelligent, delightful, warm and wonderful person. She was a caring piano teacher to my daughters and became a close friend of our entire family. We were so lucky to have her in our lives! She and I shared the "Smith" connection and love of music. As a music teacher, Rosemary touched so many lives! We will all miss her terribly. I can still hear her laugh. Sending love to her family, from Trish, Jay, Katie and Diana DeMallie and love from my mother, Helen Johnson, who is up in heaven with Rosemary, probably singing and playing the piano together.
