Wilfred Whitley Obituary
AGE: 64 • North Plainfield
Wilfred H. "Toby" Whitley, 64, departed this life Tues. July 18, 2017 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Somerset in Somerville. Born in Freeman, VA, he was a lifelong Plainfield resident and 1971 graduate of Plainfield High School before moving to North Plainfield. Known to all as Toby, he was employed with the Plainfield Police Dept. retiring as a sergeant with 36 years of service.
Surviving is his daughter LaTora J. Whitley; his granddaughter Madison Whitley; his parents Harold B. and Lorraine C. Whitley; one brother Alfred H. Whitley (Deborah); one sister Lori A. Whitley and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing Thurs. 5-8pm in Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 216 Liberty St., Plainfield. Funeral Fri. 11am in the church. Interment, Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Arrangements by Brown's Funeral Home. www.brownsfuneralhome.net.

This has really and truly thrown me for a loop... Toby has been like a father to me ever since I could remember.. We kept in touch every year, especially w/ his birthday being the day before mine and always ended the convo, "Ok, talk to you tomorrow" and like clockwork, would always call me on MY day!! Even w/ me moving to Florida, he still kept in contact and let me know when he bought his Florida home about 15 mins away me.. He always reminded me how he named his daughter as close as he could to my name... I'm at a lost for words because I didn't know he passed, but I'm humbled because I know he knew he was truly loved... So on behalf of myself, my Mother (Harolyn), and my family, I send my deepest, deepest condolences to his family and the many lives he's touched... Love you always, Toby (Dad)!!!

I just got the news. I'm shocked and sorry to hear of the loss of Toby, Aunt Lorraine and Uncle Harold, Alfred, and Lori. I grew up with the Whitley's, and Toby was the big brother to Lori and me who lovingly tormented us all. He was a great guy, and I'm proud to have known him and of his accomplishments in life. Rest in peace Toby. You are loved and will never be forgotten.

My big cousin, my buddy. You always took me under your wing. You protected me from a young girl until I was a grown woman. You were like the big brother I never had. I can never forget the fun we shared...."Stroller Softball Team" dance 1983, motorcycle rides, Roccos and then room mates...omg just laughing all the time. I am truly going to miss you. Toby was one of the original Community Policing Officers in the city's West End back in 1991. He later became the Supervisor of the COP Unit when he was promoted to Sergeant of Police. He truly loved Plainfield and will be misse by us all.

Well there are so many!! We we were in the same Boys Scout Troop. Toby thought he was Bill Cosby Jr... He would keep us up with the Fat Albert voice...HEY...HEY...HEY!!! Like non-Stop! All ways a prankster ... but the life of all of our adventures!
