Howard A. Semer, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Howard A. Semer, M.D., F.A.C.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ, at the age of 76. He was a practicing cardiologist in Scotch Plains, NJ up to the time of his final illness. Dr. Semer was born in Plainfield, NJ in Muhlenberg Hospital. Later in life he was on the staff there and served as Chief of Cardiology. After Muhlenberg closed he continued practicing at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Society of Echocardiography. He was a graduate of Plainfield High School, Cornell University, and the University of Maryland Medical School. In his senior year he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. In the final year of his residency he was granted a fellowship to Stanford University where he worked on the development of the heart-lung machine. Upon completion of his residency he served as a captain in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at a SAC base in Bangor, Maine. He was honorably discharged in 1968.

He is survived by his sons, Bruce Semer, of Greenwich, CT, and Scot Semer and his wife Gigi, of Brooklyn, NY; his sister, Susan Martin, of Ocean, NJ, and two granddaughters.

He was admired and respected by his colleagues, patients, staff, family, and friends, and he will be greatly missed. The family has requested that those who wish to send a tribute to honor Dr. Semer's memory, do so by donating to their favorite charity in his name.. Final services and interment took place December 28, 2012, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ.
