The Honorable Judge Mac D. Hunter Judge of Superior Court of New Jersey (Ret.)
Mac D. "Judge" Hunter of Plainfield, New Jersey passed away on March 11, 2017 at the age of 82.
When he graduated he was the second African American to do so at Seton Hall Law School. Soon after graduation in 1967, he was sworn in as a member of the New Jersey State Bar and became a Deputy Attorney General for the state of New Jersey and then Acting Director for the Division of Civil Rights. He was a successful attorney, practicing law for 25 years in Plainfield, New Jersey. During this time was appointed to N.J. Supreme Court Committee On Attorney Ethics for Union County in 1977 and served as Chairman 1982-1983.
In May 1986 Former Governor Kean appointed Judge Hunter to serve on the Superior Court of New Jersey, in Union and Hudson Counties. Former Governor Florio reappointed the Judge with tenure in May, 1993. Judge Hunter served until his retirement after being on the bench for nearly two decades. Judge Hunter was the first sitting judge in New Jersey to earn a Master's degree in Judicial Studies from The National Judicial College in Reno, NV.
He was a longtime active civil-rights advocate and a lifetime member of the NAACP. He served on the Supreme Court Task Force for Minority Concerns. Recently, he was the recipient of the 2016 Trailblazer Award for the Lillian and Lillian Foundation, and honored for his support in protecting, empowering and advocating for women, children, men and families affected by domestic violence. Mac Hunter was united in marriage to Janice Misenheimer February 10, 1962. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dr. Janice E. Hunter of Plainfield, NJ; sister Carrie Stafford of Dover, NJ; his son David Hunter and his wife Teresa Hunter of Union, NJ; his daughter Kimberly Turner, Esq. and her husband Randal Turner, Esq., of Washington, DC; his daughter Dr. Jennifer Hunter- Negaard, and her husband Donald Negaard, Esq., of Minot, ND; three grandchildren: Charles Hunter, Mia Turner and Jasmine Turner and multiple and nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased in death by his parents John and Susie Hunter, brothers Leroy Hunter, Willie (Frank) Hunter and sister Jessie Taylor.
He will be missed by the many who loved him.
He will lie in state Friday, March 17, 2017 from 4p.m.to 6p.m. followed by the Home going service from 6p.m to 8p.m. at Cathedral International, 277 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, NJ 08861.
