Minister Shirley Ann Peteet, 61, who worked tirelessly on behalf of children at Union Baptist Church in South River, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at St. Peters Medical Center, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. Born on Mar. 23, 1950 in New Brunswick, N.J., Minister Peteet was the second of ten children born to Anna Ruth (Felton) Peteet and Emory Peteet, Sr. She grew up in South River, where she graduated from South River High School in 1968. From 1971 to 2000 she was employed at Hercules, Inc., in Parlin, N.J. as a buyer. After leaving that position she joined Green Tree Chemical Technologies also located in Parlin, N.J.

At a young age, Shirley was baptized at Union Baptist Church in South River. She loved the Lord and she loved her church. A faithful and devoted servant, she had a special place in her heart for children. For many years, she served as superintendent of the Sunday School at Union Baptist Church. Among other things, she ran the Vacation Bible School. She was elevated to the title of Dean of Christian Education through the Middlesex Central Baptist Association because of her selfless and steadfast service to children. She was the chairperson of the Trustee Ministry, treasurer of the Pastor's Aide, a former member of the Nurses Unit, a former member of the Youth Choir, Armor Bearer of the pastor, recording secretary for District Union No. 1, corresponding secretary for the Congress of Christian Education and ministry coordinator for the Joshua Center. She was also active in the South River Congregational Church. As she dedicated her life to the Lord for many years, in 2010 Shirley was appointed Minister in Training and was currently completing ministerial studies under the instruction of Rev. Dr. Bernadette Glover-Williams at The Cathedral International in Perth Amboy, NJ. On her last day here on this earth, Saturday, February 25, 2012, Shirley was consecrated by the powers vested by the Holy Spirit to Minister Shirley Peteet by her Pastor; Rev. Jeffery J. Broughton Sr. To God be the Glory. Beyond the church, she served in the community in many roles including as a member of the South River Board of Health.

She was predeceased by her father, Emory Peteet, Sr. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her mother, Anna Peteet; one daughter, Kenya Mann Bizzell and son-in-law Jonathan Bizzell; one son, Karreen Mann; niece, LaTrechia Peteet, who was like a daughter; granddaughter, NaChe Carelock; six brothers, Emory, Peteet Jr.and sister-in-law Delores, Donald Peteet and sister-in-law Glenda, Coleman "Teddy" Peteet and sister-in-law Antoinette, Edward Peteet and sister-in-law Tia, Louis Peteet and sister-in-law Ivette and Joseph Peteet; three sisters, Linda, Julia and Donna Peteet; a host of nieces, nephews and others who loved her dearly.

Services are in the care of Gustav J. Novak Funeral Home, 419 Barclay Street, Perth Amboy, NJ 08861. Visiting hours will be on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Gustav J. Novak Funeral Home between the hours of 2PM and 4PM and then from 7PM to 9PM. On Saturday, February 3, 2012, viewing will be from 8AM to 9AM, with Home Going Services promptly following.
