Cornelius J. Hughes (Neil), 80, of Shadow Lake Village, formerly of White Stone, Virginia and Oceanport, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Care One at King James. Cornelius was born in Long Branch to Cornelius J. and Luisa (Bussmann) Hughes.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert and sisters, Lillian DeBouter, and Edith Ertel. Cornelius is survived by his wife of 60 years, Constance Joan (Smith) Hughes; his son, Cornelius J. Hughes and his wife Julie Hughes of Oceanport; daughters, Constance J. (Hughes) Majeski and her husband John G. Majeski of Middletown and Rita Mary (Hughes) Scheer and her husband George S.J Scheer of Richmond, VA. He also leaves 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Neil retired from The International Labor Union of the Operating Engineers Local #825, Springfield, NJ, where he was a member for 47 years. He served as a member on the Executive Board and Vice President of the Local 825 Heavy Equipment Operating Engineers Training Center, South Brunswick. He was a longtime member of Long Branch Ice Boat & Yacht Club, a Trustee at The American Labor Museum, Botto House, an Executive Board member at the Northeast Monmouth County Regional Sewer Authority and a longtime member of the Nights Of Columbus.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 10 at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown.
