William Gindin Obituary

The Honorable William H. Gindin

AGE: 85 • Redding, CT

The Honorable William H. Gindin passed away on May 24 at his home in Redding, Connecticut with his wife, Emily, by his side. He was a Lawyer and a Bankruptcy Judge who advocated for understanding the increase in rates of bankruptcy as a consequence of underlying social problems .

William was born on Sept 1, 1931, in Perth Amboy, NJ. to Jac and Belle (Steinberg) Gindin. He graduated from Brown University and Yale Law School. He was deeply proud of his distinguished career as a Judge, ultimately becoming the Chief Federal Judge of the Bankruptcy Court of the District of New Jersey.

Judge Gindin was a member of numerous professional associations, including the New Jersey State and American Bar Associations. He was involved in the Inns of Bankruptcy and played a key role in the development of the Bankruptcy Law Section, and was honored by having the annual bench-bar conference named for him. He was active in community affairs as well. He was past president of Temple Sholom in Plainfield, NJ and was also President of the Plainfield Rotary Club. He was chairman of the Plainfield Human Relations commission after the 1967 riots there. Later, he was active in the community of Princeton, New Jersey and then Naples, Florida

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Emily, his four children, Tom Gindin, Janine Gordon, Suzanne Hinsdale, and Geoffrey Drucker, and their spouses, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Very saddened to learn of his passing. Judge Gindin was always polite, considerate and mindful not only of the process but the primary purpose of the process. Countless families remain in homes today solely because of the ample opportunities he gave them to do so. That benevolence, and his unwavering sense of humor and justice were a gift to the bar and public. Seeing him smile from the bench, joking with counsel or debtors, putting them at ease, made it a pleasure to go to court. He has been and will be missed. God speed, sir and thank you.

I just read this and want to extend my sympathy to Emily and her family.

Bill was an extremely fine man and I had the pleasure of knowing him when he lived in Perth Amboy and Plainfield.

I always thought highly of him and my husband, Michael joins me in remembering all his accomplishments.

May he rest in peace.
