LaVerne Smith Obituary

LaVerne Frances (Keller) Smith, 89, of Glendale, Ariz., and longtime former resident of Waverly, died Thursday, May 5, 2011.
Treasured wife, mother, grandma and aunt. Beloved wife for 58 years of the late Dr. James J. (J.J. or Doc) Smith. She is survived by five children, Mel Greenlee (husband, Tom Tompkins) of Berkeley, Calif., Patricia (husband, Charles R.) Boyce of Chatham, James Michael (wife, Susan Hessee) Smith of Champaign, Betty Jo Smith of Jacksonville and Timothy (wife, Eileen Regan) Smith of Chapel Hill, N.C.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; beloved "little sister," Lorene (husband, Lester) Shearer of Frankfort, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews. LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, J.J.; parents, Edward and Bessie (Szopenske) Keller; and brothers, Edward C., Wallace and Virgil.
LaVerne was born during November 1921, and grew up in Marshall County, Kan. After graduating from high school in Frankfort, Kan., she attended Topeka Business College, was one of the first to benefit from Civil Service Testing in Kansas and worked at the Department of Poultry Husbandry at Kansas State University.
She married James J. Smith on Sept. 24, 1943, in Manhattan, Kan. Upon her husband J.J.'s graduation from veterinary school at Kansas State in 1945, the couple moved to Waverly to set up a veterinary practice. For almost 50 years, LaVerne served as bookkeeper, scheduler, bill collector and all around organizer of her husband's veterinary practice, which is well chronicled in her entertaining book, The Cat's Meow. During J.J.'s long veterinary career, LaVerne rose to the presidency of the Auxiliary to the Illinois State Veterinary Association.
In Waverly, LaVerne was very active in the community, served as Girl Scout leader, taught Red Cross first aid and water safety, served as President of the PTA, was active on the committee which established special education in the school district and served on the County Board of Health and the Jacksonville Area Association for Retarded Children. For nearly 30 years, she taught Red Cross swim lessons each summer in Springfield, Jacksonville, or the Franklin Outing Club. LaVerne also taught piano lessons and served as organist for Saint Sebastian Church, Holy Rosary Church and Sacred Heart Church.
In 1990, LaVerne achieved her lifelong goal of earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield (formerly Sangamon State) at age 68. In addition, LaVerne achieved her lifetime dream of visiting all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. At UIS, she was awarded the Jacqueline Jackson Creative Writing Award in 2001. She spent her final years in Glendale, Ariz., swimming daily at the YMCA, participating in her church, St. Raphael's, and making many new friends who admired her warmth, energy and unfailing good spirit.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Sebastian Church in Waverly. Burial will be at St. Sebastian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly, with a prayer service being held at 4 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions can be made to: Pathway Foundation, 1201 South Main Street, P.O. Box 400, Jacksonville, IL 62651, or c/o the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.

Patty and the Smith Family,
I just adored your mother. She was fun, and I have so many wonderful memories of weekends in Waverly with the family during high school. I so enjoyed her book, The Cat's Meow, and the Christmas letters that I received from her. I was recently in Springfield, and my brother-in-law, Pat Whalen, told me of Laverne's passing. Please accept my sympathy. Much love, LouAnn (Clancy) Boto

My mother, Myra Stock, was so fond of LaVerne. I knew she was a wonderful person through her. Because she needed a ride to the airport after a Keller reunion, I got to know her better. What a nice visit we had! I now know what my mother spoke of about her. Even though I could tell she wasn't feeling the best, I could tell she had more energy and love of life than most people her age. I feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to get to know her if only for a short time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Jeanette (Stock) Weber

Patti, Chuck and family,
I enjoyed being around both your parents when they would pop in during the time I worked for you. I also purchased a copy of "The Cat's Meow", and felt like I really got to know them through your mother's eyes. What a truly incredible life she lived. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Always looked forward to her letter and pictures at Christmas. Our family always enjoyed being with your family at veterinary meeting - especially swimming together

To the family: Your Mom & Dad provided so many people with such wonderful and entertaining memories it would take a novel to contain them. I have my own memories that still to this day make me smile-who else would put a splint on a hamster's little paw-while LaVerne was consoling my kids, Doc was "doctoring", well that is, after you helped him get the sausage off the table! They were the most genuine people God put on this earth. Together again at last-what a reunion of hearts.

Though I was closer to her sister, Lorene, I was most fortunate to be able to spend time with her and her family when she moved to the Phoenix area where I live. She was always "young" in her outlook and so interesting--we shared and laughed over many remembrances of family escapades--such as butchering time on the farm , harvest time and Uncle Ed playing the fiddle--always music and laughter when the Swiss got together. I also remember meeting Jim when I was in grade school at Summerfield and my Dad, Harley Prichard , hired him to teach 7-8 grade. That helped him decide to go to vet school! My heart goes out to all the family and I wish I could be with you--my thoughts are there. Jeannine Dahl(Scottsdale,Az)

I have so many memories of Doc and LaVerne starting from a very young age, and spanning many decades. We Jarrett kids grew up knowing all the Smiths, and as an adult I visited often taking advantage of good food and drink as well as veterinary work. My deep sympathy and condolences to the family.

I have so many fond memories of Doc and Laverne. Memories of running around their farm, Doc's deep voice working in his plentiful garden. Laverne just as sweet and kind as could be. I so clearly remember when they bought Betty a 3-wheel bike and I thought that was the coolest. Thanks for the memories:)

Aunt LaVerne once told me that she learned to dance by stepping on my Dad's feet and dancing around. Now May they dance in Heaven. May God our Father bless you and give you a peace that passes all understanding. I will miss her newsy Christmas letters- it was always about her children and grands. I am sending my love to all of you and will be praying for you.
