Richard Ashburn Obituary

Richard Ashburn, 83, of Pearl, died Friday, May 6, 2011, at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
He was born Sept. 24, 1927, in Pearl, the son of Alvin Leroy and Zula Ellen Lane Ashburn. He married Evelyn Ard in December of 1950 in Granite City and she preceded him in death Dec. 2, 2000. He then married Florence McDowell and she survives.
He is also survived by his children, Brenda (husband, Larry) Conner of Fordland, Mo., Deborah Moore of Pittsfield, Rick (wife, Elana) Ashburn of Jacksonville, Fla. and Sheila (fiancé, Buddy Summers) Marable of Winchester; eleven grandchildren, Scott (Rachel) Conner, Brady Conner, Rodney (Deana) Ashburn, Courtney (Robert) Nelson, Richard K. Moore, Mindy Moore, Shane Ashburn, Kenneth L. Marable, Kylar Marable, Clayton Summers and Austin Summers; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Lester, and Roy Ashburn; two sisters, Hilda Madden and Ada May Ashburn, in infancy; and a son-in-law, Billy Moore.
Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He then worked for Illinois B & O Railroad, before becoming a cutter in the steel industry. He was employed several years by American Steel in Madison County as well as other area steel mills. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the NRA. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to fish and hunt, especially coon hunting.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Burial with military honors will be at Green Pond Cemetery near Pearl. Family will meet friends 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials gifts are suggested to Missouri Crippled Children's Services. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.airsman-hires.com. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield is in charge of arrangements.

The only Grandpa I knew and yes, THE BEST! I will cherish the memories of the summers I spent with Pa and Grandma. I won't miss the cowpies....Hammerman, I will miss you.

This was the BEST man ever! I've got so many good memories that I will keep close. He always made me feel like family and I considered him my grandpa. Pa I will miss you. Please say hello to grandma and Harland for me.
