Fannie Logsdon Obituary

Fannie Mae Logsdon, 85, Beardstown, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.

She was born March 5, 1926, in Beardstown, the daughter of Gilbert and Cora Mae Birthright Larkin. She married the love of her life, Herschel R. Logsdon, in Beardstown, on June 5, 1944, and they had been married 66 years, 360 days. Fannie Mae was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and life-long friend to many.

Along with her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Linda Loxley Meloy of Muscatine, Iowa, and Lari Logsdon of Bothell, Wash.; a son, Robert Logsdon of rural Schuyler County; and a sister, Lillian Louise (John) Veseling of Salem, Wis. Seven grandchildren survive, H.F. Loxley of Scottsdale, Ariz., Wendy Sue Hillyer (Scott) of Rushville, Curtis Robert Logsdon (Jamie) of Rushville, Shaun Michael Opperman (Sara) of New Berlin, Joshua Andrew Opperman of Hillsboro, Ore., Robert Michael Meloy (Cherra) of Nevada, Iowa, and Marissa Anne Meloy of Ames, Iowa. Four great-grandchildren, Danielle, Kiley, Natalee and Declan, also survive. There is one great-great-grandchild, Liam, who survives, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Gilbert "Sparky" Larkin.

Mrs. Logsdon attended local schools and graduated from Beardstown High School with the Class of 1944, serving as alumni class chairperson for 11 reunions. While a senior in high school, she was a part-time employee in the office of attorney R.L. Northcutt. After her marriage and while her husband was in the service, she was office manager for B.W. Smith, Cass County Superintendent of Schools and then she worked for the Illinoian-Star Newspaper as the society editor. She graduated from District 117 School of Practical Nursing in Jacksonville in 1972 and practiced at Myers Convalescent and Skilled Nursing Home in Beardstown.

Mrs. Logsdon was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years and was an active member of Circle 6 of United Methodist Women. While her children were in school she held several offices in PTA and was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She served as Ways and Means chairperson while a member of the Beardstown Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed working on her family's genealogy and belonged to both the Versailles Area and Schuyler County Historical and Genealogical Societies. She was a former member of the Villa Tone Chapter of Sweet Adelines International in Jacksonville and for the past several years served as an Adult Education Tutor under the direction of the Lincoln Land Community College TEAL Program.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation with the family will be from 2-4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday. Following the visitation, a memorial service will begin at 4 p.m., under the direction of Sager Funeral Home. A dinner will be held at 5 p.m. at the Beardstown Elks Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., or to Shriners Hospital in St. Louis.
