Wanda Weaks Obituary

Wanda Davis Weaks A loving mother, daughter, grandmother and sweet friend to many went to her heavenly home last week. Wanda Davis Weaks died Friday, May 9, 2008, at Christian Manor. Wanda was born on July 27, 1930, in Lamesa, Texas, to Claude and Dora Davis. The family made several moves, first to Pampa, Texas, and from there to Orange, Texas, when Wanda was nine. She finished her schooling in Orange, graduating from Luxer Stark High School at the young age of 16. The family left Orange and made their move to Plainview for their permanent home. Wanda enrolled at West Texas State University where she earned her bachelor's degree, graduating at the age of 19. She went on to further her education by earning a master's degree from the University of Houston. Wanda was a dedicated teacher at Plainview High School for many years. She made a difference in many young people's lives, and many of her students stayed in touch with her, reminding Wanda how much they enjoyed being in her classes and the many ways she had changed their lives for the better. Wanda was very active in the community. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for years. She was a founding member of Grace Presbyterian Church, was president of the Gamma Delphin Study Club and a 50-year-member and served as president of PTA. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a school room mother and a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Wanda had a passion for cooking. She spent many hours cooking not only for her family but also for friends and neighbors. She was always the first to bring a dish for beloved families or when a friend or neighbor was ill or in need. Wanda was a gracious hostess to all who entered her home. Friends loved coming to Wanda's home, especially the friends of her two sons, Jon and Micah. They loved to hang out at Wanda's home where there was always something good to eat. Wanda was a very giving person to all and a steadfast friend. She had a generous heart to all and especially to those in need. She definitely exemplified the Bible verse, Matthew 25:31-46, which includes the verse: "If you do it to the least of these, you do it unto me." Wanda was an adoring grandmother to her granddaughter, Braya Jess, who lovingly called her "Wanna." Wanda was preceded in death by her mother and father. Wanda is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jonathan Weaks of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and Micah and Amy Weaks of Dallas; a granddaughter, Braya Jess of Lake Tahoe, Nev; the father of her sons, Bill Weaks; lifelong and dedicated friends, Roy and Peggy Parr; and Betty Gonzales, her dedicated caregiver and friend. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Bartley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church with Lanny Voss officiating. Interment will follow at Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to The Scholarship of Grace Fund through the First Presbyterian Church of Plainview, or Plainview Meals on Wheels.

My deepest sympathy to your family during this time. Wanda shopped with me at Malouf's in Lubbock during this past year and I addored her. She and I would spend hours looking at clothes while she told me stories about her life. She always made me laugh and brought so much fun energy into my day!

II Corinthians 5:6-8 “Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and willing rather be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord”

God Bless,

Dear Jon and Micah,

What a wonderful and precious person your mother was. She was a dear friend to my mother and I have such fond memories of her spoiling us when we were growing up! She was and is an angel and I am grateful that she is at peace. I am sorry I cannot be there with you today to celebrate her life. May we all learn from her example of friendship, grace and selfless giving and may you find peace and solace in the coming days. Blessings to you all.

Mrs Weaks (dare I call her less?) was truly an inspirational teacher. She motivated me to do my best and to accept nothing less.

Jon, Micah and family,
My deepest sympathy to you all. I am living proof of the wonderful teaching your Mom gave to so many. I was so pleased to have Wanda as one of my Sunday School teachers at Grace Presbyterian and learned so much through her graciousness, kindness to others, and deep sensitivity for all of life's little bumps in the road. Wanda truly exemplified God's direction to each of us. Her ability to always love everyone is a true testament of her life! Her caring of others and closesness to so many will always be remembered. I will be forever grateful for her kindness to my Mom.
Wanda was not only a beauty on the outside, but her inner beauty was something to behold as well, and we are all better people for having known her. Rest well, dear lady, you are truly an Angel among us!

I'm still reeling from the news of Wanda's death. She was my mother's best friend for decades, and my 'other mother' all of my life. I grew up spending holidays and vacations with Wanda, Bill, Jon and Micah, and some of my best memories of my youth are of Wanda. She was always the first one there whenever there was an illness or death, and she truly saved my life when I was going through cancer in the early 90s. She stayed with me before, during, and after that whole experience, and made the entire process so much easier by her presence (and her cooking!). I could go on and write volumes about Wanda and what she has meant to my life, and the life of my family, but I will end by saying the world is a better place because of Wanda, a sadder place because of her absence, but I know she is rejoicing in heaven today, happy and at peace at last, reunited with those she loved so much. I will always love you, Wanda - and you will never, ever be forgotten.
