Joe Wallace Obituary

Dr. Joe Long Wallace Dr. Joe Long Wallace, formally of Austin, died at home in Midland, Texas on September 18, 2010. Dr. Wallace was born October 1, 1949 in Austin to Margaret Long Wallace and Chester Gregg Wallace, Sr. Joe Wallace had a lifelong love of his family, traveling, reading, and especially the great outdoors. One of his favorite things was to spend time at his ranch hunting, and quietly reading. Joe displayed his independence, determination and mischievous curiosity early in life. His mother remembers a trip to the Grand Canyon when Joe was five and a man asked if that was her boy swinging on the railing out over the canyon. When Joe was eleven, he wanted to have the highest flying rocket in the neighborhood. Joe climbed to the roof of the carport, lit the rocket, and simultaneously fell off the roof as the rocket lifted off. When Joe was 13 he was involved in an accident that represented a turning point in his life. A lawnmower shot a piece of wire into his arm, resulting in an emergency room visit. After many failed attempts by the staff to remove the wire, a young intern was finally successful, sparking Joe's fascination and lifelong dedication to medicine. As a junior high school student Joe would get up early before school, ride his bicycle to his parent's land outside of town for the first day of hunting season, and still manage to get to school on time. When he was in high school Joe and friend Bob Walters ended up with an unusual trophy when they pulled a stolen (to their disappointment) motorcycle out of Lake Austin with their fishing line. Joe loved to tinker, bargain, and collect old "stuff" especially woodworking tools and antiques, and like his father was a voracious reader with an almost photographic memory. Whenever someone asked about other countries, cultures, or the world in general Joe could recall minute details sounding almost like a walking encyclopedia. Joe met the love of his life, Martha Alice Coker, while at East Texas State University. They married in 1971, had their first child, Jennifer, and moved to Arlington, Texas so that Joe could attend Southwestern Medical School. It was while Joe was in medical school that their second child, Hugh (of equally mischievous curiosity), was born and Joe joined the United States Air Force. The family moved to San Antonio, Albuquerque (where Amanda was born) and finally settled back in Austin. Joe and his family lived in Austin until their youngest child, Amanda, graduated from high school. Joe had always dreamed of living in the country and finally had his chance in 1999 when he and Marcy moved to the country just outside of Midland and Joe opened his clinic, West Loop Family Medicine. Joe was dedicated to his family, patients, employees, and colleagues and will be missed by all. Joe is survived by his wife, Marcy Coker Wallace, their three children, Jennifer Wallace of New York City, Hugh Wallace of Midland, and Amanda Wallace of Austin. He is also survived by his mother, Margaret Wallace of Austin, brothers, Gregg Wallace and wife Patsy, James Wallace and wife Jan, sister Judy Wallace of Austin, brother-in-laws Rick Coker and wife Melinda, Gary Coker and wife Nancy, and many loved nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Odessa. There will be a viewing at 5pm, followed by the funeral at 6pm. He will be buried in Austin at the Wallace Family Cemetery on Thursday at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Heart Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. To sign the guest book, go to our website at www.sunsetodessa.com.

I along with most of Odessa will truely miss Dr. Wallace. He was my doctor for over twelve years and was the only doctor my little brother ever knew. I have so many fond memories of him, one of our favorite things to talk about were the cows he had on his ranch. My favorite story to tell is about when I got attacked by a rooster and it spurred me on both sides of my leg, I remember after I told Dr. Wallace what happened he chuckled, shook his head and told me I was the first patient he had who got attacked by a rooster, I laughed and I still laugh now because we both know that it's just my luck to have something like that happen. I'm going to miss Dr. Wallace more than words can express and I will never forget all the help he gave me over the years. My condolenses go out to his family. We were all blessed to know him and he will never be forgotten.

Dr. Wallace was a kind and interesting man. I am deeply saddened by his early departure. He was a special doctor in that he listened to his patients and answered questions which is rare today. I remember him admiring a scarf that I was wearing one time during a visit to his office. He mentioned that his wife loved to wear scarves. He had recently bought her a scarf for a gift and told me about the website that he used to buy this scarf. He gave me the website information. I remember thinking, "What a thoughtful gift?" He will be missed. He was a unique person. Thank you Dr. Wallace. May your family have peace in their hearts knowing that you were truly loved and respected.

Dr. Wallace was truly a precious human being. His kindness and caring came from deep within - showing through in his "teddybear" appearance. He always made time to really listen to patients. We enjoyed visiting with him over the years about travel, fishing and ranching - he loved it all. We are so shocked and saddened by this loss. May God Bless the Wallace family and may they find comfort in knowing how many people loved and respected him.

Joe and I were roommates at East Texas and had some great times, except when he stayed in the "Library" for hours and we couldn't get in!

You and Joe were there when we married.

We were there when Jenny was born. You were in labor and Joe stopped for gas before going to the hospital. We beat you to the hospital! You almost delivered in the elevator!!
We remember both of you fondly, the late night bridge games when your mom taught us to play. Joe had to leave in the middle(usually in the middle of the night) to checck on his chemistry experiments..

Although we haven't kept up with each other. We still think of you often.
Our prayers are with you and the kids.

We are so sad. He was not only our doctor, but our friend. Dr. Wallace was always so funny and made my kids laugh no matter how ill they were. They looked forward to the candy and stickers. I just wanted him to make them feel better. In more ways than one, he ALWAYS did. He supported our kids by purchasing raffle tickets and girl scout cookies, and sponsored their All Star teams every year. At one time, our kids thought he was Santa, w/o the beard. We love him dearly and we will miss him so much. May GOD bless Mrs. Wallace and his entire family. May you all find the strength and courage to move on during your time of sorrow.
Our deepest sympathy,

DR. WALLACE WAS THE BEST DR. I EVER HAD. HE WAS ALWAYS CARING AND KIND. HE ALWAYS ASKED ABOUT MY FAMILY WHEN I VISITED. WE SPENT TIME ALSO TALKING ABOUT OTHER THINGS SUCH AS HIS COMBINE WHICH HE NEVER GOT FIXED, HIS LARGE SCREW FOR HIS BENCH HE WAS BUILDING TO THIEVES AND LIARS, AND THEN ASK ME HOW DID WE GET ON THIS SUJECT. IT WILL BE HARD TO FIND ANOTHER DR THAT IS AS CARING, KIND , AND AS FRIENDLY AS HE WAS. I LOVED MY DOCTOR AND WILL MISS HIM GREATLY. HE WENT THROUGH ALOT WITH ME AND MY FAMILY WHEN MY BROTHER AND MOM DIED. THANK YOU DOCTOR JOE FOR ALL YOU DID FOR US. I WILL MISS YOU AND OUR GOOD CONVERSATIONS WE HAD AFTER YOU FIXED ME UP. EVEN THOUGH I WAS SICK I ALWAY LOOKED FORWARD TO MY VISIT WITH YOU BECAUSE I KNOW YOU CARED AND ALSO BECAUSE OF OUR GOOD CONVERSATIONS THAT WE ALWAYS HAD. THANK YOU SO MUCH... YOU WILL BE MISSED!!! MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY.
