Wanda Higgins Obituary

Wanda Yvonne Shain Higgins was born September 11, 1935 to Vera Bell Wilbanks Shain and Garnett Shain in Alba, Texas. In 1938, the family moved to Sweetwater, Texas, and in 1946, moved to Midland, Texas. Yvonne graduated from Midland High School in 1953 and established her career as a bookkeeper working in the construction industry and oil field service until she retired. She had three children from her first marriage. In June of 1980, she and R. S. Higgins, Jr. married and her family grew to include his two children. Yvonne and R.S. lived in the Houston area before moving to Hobbs, NM in 1992. They found a great church in First United Methodist of Hobbs and made many wonderful and close friendships. Many of her memorable times in her life included traveling and RV'ing across the U.S. and a six month trip to Karlstad, Sweden. She served in community organizations including her church activities, Women In Construction (WIC), Civic Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi service sorority, and the Womens' Republican Party. She enjoyed spending her time doing counted cross-stitch and other types of handwork; she adored playing bridge with her friends, and spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 30 years, R.S. Higgins, Jr., and son, Scott Keith Higgins. She is survived by her children Debbie Walker and husband Jimmie, Roger Dugan and wife Kelley, Becky Clowers and husband Dale, and Dawn Higgins; her siblings Edwenna Tom and husband Rufus, Robert Shain and wife Sally; her grandchildren Jennifer Dugan, Michelle Williams, Meredith and Claire Higgins, Wyatt and Clayton Turk and Wesley Clowers; her great-grandchildren Hannah and Haiden Williams; and her beloved nephew, nieces and extended family. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Hobbs, Cancer research or a charity of your choice. Memorial services will be 4:00 PM, Sunday, January 16, 2011 at First United Methodist Church of Hobbs with the Reverend Darren Skinner officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

I knew and worked with Yvonne for several years while she and RS were in the Houston area. The picture of her on this page will always be the way I remember her, she always had a great smile and was so many times a great friend. Yvonne played an important part in a successful business and as a person who lead by example.
I know her family will miss her and I offer my prayers to you in this time of sorrow but find comfort in the thought that she is in a better place now.

Debbie, Roger and Becky -- I am so sorry to hear about your mom. She was always so good to us Leath girls, and I thought of her as my second mom when I was growing up. Please know I am thinking about all of you. -- Susie (Leath) Ingram
