Alexander Vlangas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2017.
Alexander William Vlangas, a resident of Baltimore, MD died on October 8, 2017 following a brief illness with his wife and children by his side.

He was born in Baltimore on January 29, 1930, the son of William Louis and Georgia Vlangas.

He attended Baltimore City Schools and graduated from City College in 1948. In 1953, he graduated from Towson State College with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Alex proudly served Baltimore City Schools as a teacher, Vice Principal, and Principal in several elementary schools from 1953-1970. He earned a M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of MaryIand in 1970. He joined the Towson State College faculty, teaching part time in 1963 and later became a full-time professor in 1970. At Towson State College, he enjoyed teaching elementary courses and supervising teaching interns in Baltimore City and County Schools. He retired from his full-time position in 1991 but continued to teach education courses as an adjunct professor for several years.

He and his wife were also the owners of the Chesapeake Deli in Towson, MD, where they prepared and served breakfast and lunch from 1977 to 1997.

Alex was a devoted husband, father, Papou, and friend. He was a man of true integrity who valued a person's honesty more than their wealth, and in this respect he was an outstanding example to his family and friends. Alex greatly valued the many friendships he had made over the years, both with his teaching colleagues, and those from childhood which he retained all his life. Alex loved his family, which included those joined by marriage.

Alex was known for his generous spirit, his rich laugh, and his ability to be truly present in conversation. He was respected for his wisdom and deep compassion for others. He loved telling stories, especially of his childhood and teaching career, but was just as interested in hearing the stories from others. Even in casual encounters, he shared personal moments; perfect strangers would often feel that with him, they were reconnecting with an old friend.

He attended the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, and raised his family in the Orthodox faith. He remained a parishioner of the Church for his whole life, held a deep pride in his Greek roots and traditions, and found strength in his Greek community.

Alex was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan, and maintained his allegiance to Towson University, cheering for the Towson Basketball team and visiting the campus to relive old memories.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Aspacia; his children, Georgan Flavell and her husband, Mark of Annapolis, MD; Helen Brown, of Baltimore, MD, and William and his wife, Jennifer, of Bel Air, MD; and his six grandchildren: Magdalene Sfondouris, Aspacia, Savvas, and Alexandra Pantelides, and Alexander and Aspacia Vlangas; his sister Helen Gretes and her sons, John and William Gretes. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Louis and James Vlangas.

Relatives and friends will gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham MD 21236, on Thursday, October 12, 2017, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Additional visitation will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cemetery Chapel, 5917 Windsor Mill Rd., Baltimore MD 21207, Friday, October 13, 2017, 10:00-10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Cemetery Chapel. Interment Greek Orthodox Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen VA 23060-9979.

Will, and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I got to know Alex, Dad, Grandpa, while Will was living in Perry Hall. I always loved talking to Alex because he was always warm and personable. I had the pleasure of spending trips back and forth to Ravens stadium for quite of few years and the trip back and forth, and that time with Alex, was just as fun as the game itself. I was very close to my Dad and saw the same qualities in Alex as I saw in my Dad. I know how hard your loss is, it is hard for anyone who knew him as well. Your Dad will be up in Heaven looking after you and one day you will see him again. In the meantime, once the pain subsides, reflect on the good times with you Dad...and that time will come. Your Dad did impact my life and I am glad to have had the opportunity to know him. God Bless...Mike

Will, Very, very sorry to hear the news about your Dad. He was one of my favorite people. I always enjoyed talking to him in the neighborhood when I was out walking. We also had many chats about the Ravens and Orioles as we often saw each other up at the Weis Market. He was a wonderful man. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
