He was 76 years old. Tony is perhaps best known for his singing partnership with John Roberts, as a teacher...

Not sure what to say?

I knew Tony when we were undergraduates at Keele University in the UK, each studying psychology as one of our major subjects. We shared a house together for over a year; a two up two down cottage in the village of Audlem. We had lots of laughs and hours of discussion/debate/argument about psychology as well as sport. He was the original Victor Ludorum. What many people in the US didn't know about him was that he played a major acting role in two of the most avant garde films of the 1960's,...

I met Anthony at his brother, Granville's marriage to Janet in Bletchley, UK. As I recall, Tony had just returned from the BBC production of "Colluden" where he'd played an extra. He may still have been an undergrad at Keele Uni, but he was already bitten by the performance bug. I left for Canada soon afterwards. Only now reading of his illustrious career in folk academics have our paths crossed again as I was researching the song "A Gypsy's Wedding" for a paper.

I had the privilege to be a student and teaching fellow under Professor Barrand´s excellent guidance at BU 1995-2004. This photo was taken after a spring class. He is at the bottom center and his left hand is showing us his Margaret Dale. I am behind him in the yellow raincoat! He was my greatest mentor and IS the month of May!

Tony was born into a family of Salvationist in Gainsborough, England. At every opportunity family members would be at the Salvation Army Hall singing, playing their instruments and joyfully banging their tambourines in praise of the Lord. Perhaps it is not really surprising then that he became a well known singer, musician, dancer, folklorist and teacher, only that he came to live in Brattleboro, VT for most of his life! My lasting memory of Tony is of a brother with exceptional talents, ...

I was lucky to know Tony and Margaret Dale for many years. My kind regards and sincere condolences to their families and friends.

My condolences to the family. I have many memories from the Guilford Community Church, but mostly appreciated Tony's and Margaret Dale's loved showed to my Mother Marguerite (Bambi) Evans. She spoke often of conversation shared with Tony and their music.

My condolences to the family. I met Tony when I was 13 and he and John performed at the Middletown Folk Festival which was produced by my parents in New Jersey. He was so kind and supportive of me...took an interest in me and always sought me out when we saw each other at folk festivals throughout the Northeastern US. I remember once running into Tony in the bleachers at Fenway Park when I was in graduate school and we had a wild time! I shall always hold his loving energy in my heart.

I only knew Margaret Dale Barrand in the sense that she would speak to me when I would walk by their house. She seemed to be a very nice person. Tony Barrand was a major force around Brattleboro, Vermont, across the United States, and quite possibly around the world. It is hard to be sure of the first time I heard his music. John Roberts and Tony Barrand performed at the West Village Meeting House in a benefit for folk legend Utah Phillips. They performed the very first set on opening...

I was a student of Tony's at BU in the late '80's. After reading his and Margaret Dale's obituaries I offer my condolences to their family for the loss of two such extraordinary people. RIP, Tony and Margaret Dale.
