Anthony Sharkey, Mining Safety Engineer. August 17th 1925 – February 27th 2009 Anthony ‘Tony’ Sharkey, 83, retired Mining Safety Engineer passed away on February 27th, 2009 after a prolonged battle with Prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Mr. Sharkey started his mining career in 1942 as an apprentice mine surveyor and continued on as a mine manager and senior engineer in research and development. In 1967 he became a Headquarters Safety Engineer for the National Coal Board in London, England. He became heavily involved in all aspects of Longwall mining production and safety techniques. He was recruited by the United States Government in 1976 because of his considerable knowledge and expertise in the technique of Longwall mining. He then continued on in the field of safety studies in all the major coal regions of the United States. As a consultant he continued on with mining safety but also did feasibility studies for precious metals in the Western United States and in India for the World Bank In 1987 he formed his own mining consultant company of ”SHARKEY AND ASSOCIATES, INC.,” in Warrenton, Virginia, and continued his work until he retired. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Florence Sharkey, son and Daughter-in-law Paul and Linda Sharkey, daughter and son-in-law Anne and Lon Williams and Grandchildren Ryan, Tarren, Caitlin and her husband Robert. The viewing was held from 6-8PM at Moser Funeral Home on Monday, March 2nd and services were held at 11AM at St. John’s Evangelistic Catholic Church, Warrenton, Tuesday March 3rd followed by internment at Bright View Cemetery, Warrenton.
