Dear Andrea and Family,
May Our Dear Lord console you in the Loss of Austin! Hew ill always be near you to watch over you and pray for you. I am sorry I could not go to the Funeral Home and Mass, I have a bum knee! I saw my doctor today. Mean old OsteoArthritis! I will always remember Austin "feeding" me the Chalice of the Precious Blood, he never let anyone touch the Chalice. Words are often trite and inadequate at times like these. . . . I am so sorry for your loss. And am sure Austin's memory will always be a blessing to those who knew and loved him. Please know that you and yours are ever in my heart, thoughts, and prayers at this sad time.

The premature death of Austin came as a shock to the Department of Biological Sciences at USC. He was a world renowned scholar and a much-liked teacher and colleague.
His scholarly work is known all over the world, and has been cited more than 9,000 times by other scientists. He was a Carolina Distinguished Professor and we had just nominated him for the SC Governor's Award for Scientific Excellence.
When Austin started teaching courses in Domestic Animal Nutrition and Bird Biology, he quickly gained a reputation as an excellent and passionate teacher who cares for his students. In the words of one of his student evaluators: Dr. Hughes is one of the best biology professors I've had at USC.
We are saddened by the tragic passing of Austin. He will leave a gap that will be difficult to fill. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Andrea and his family. We wish you much strength to go through these difficult times.
For the Biology Department at USC,
Johannes Stratmann, Chair

His unexpected death reminds us to focus on what is important. I enjoyed some of his more philosophical articles which will continue to be read and debated. He was a deep thinker who argued against "the folly of scientism" and longed for what he called "a new Enlightenment".

I'm very sorry to learn of Austin's passing. He was a much respected member of the molecular evolution community and I had many pleasant scientific disputes with him over the years!

Dear Andrea and Family, May Our Lord comfort you and your loss of Austin. He was a dedicated man with his work, Faith and Family. He served His Church Well. He was a good Writer too. Austin will be missed! I remember seeing him at the 10:30 AM Mass at St. Joseph's each Sunday, as a dedicated Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. May He Rest in God's Arms.
