Betty Shafer Obituary

Betty Jean Shafer Betty Jean Shafer, 89, passed away 08-20-2013 in Austin. She was born March 17, 1924 in Austin to C.D and Ethel Shafer. She fought the progressive effects of Lewy Body dementia for the past 5 years and death was due to complications following a fall and hip fracture. She was a graduate of Stephen F Austin High School and attended the University of Texas, majoring in math. She worked for Austin Mortgage and Trust as their head bookkeeper for 20+ years. She then worked for M Bank (which became Bank of America) as vice president in charge of the commercial loan department, retiring for good in 1986. After retirement she enjoyed spending time at the lake house, spoiling her grandsons and traveling. She and her sister enjoyed guided tours all across the continental USA and the British Isles. They especially enjoyed their many trips to the casinos in Louisiana and Nevada (and the slots usually paid off!). She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ruby Lee Shafer and son-in-law George V. Roddy. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Shafer Roddy, grandsons Nathan Shane Roddy, and wife Sarah, Clinton George Roddy and great-grandson Jaxson Clint Roddy. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and caregivers at the Garden House, Parmer Woods, for the loving care they gave Betty over the past 3 ½ years. A Celebration of her life will be at Frank Fickett Training and Scout Service Center, 12500 N. IH 35, Austin, Texas at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.

My thoughts are with all of the family. Nana was a smart, funny, amazing lady. She will be missed terribly but remembered with great love.
