Daniel Edward Harkey
'Ed'
Mr. Harkey, 83, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully at home Friday April 15, 2005 after a courageous battle with melanoma.
He was born in East Spencer, North Carolina on July 27, 1921, son of the late Daniel Monroe Harkey and Mary Frances Crowell Harkey. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Harkey retired after thirty years of service with Southern Railway. Ed was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church where he was involved with the International Sunday School Class and Primetimers. He also enjoyed attending Bible study with First Assembly of God in Concord. Mr. Harkey was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
As a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Ed exemplified the true meaning of a Christian. As a caregiver, he showed patience and loved beyond measure, which continue to be an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Harkey is survived by his daughter, Kay Hamrick and husband, Jeff and two special grandsons, Scott and Carter Hamrick all of Mooresville, NC; brother, Robert Harkey and wife, Trulie Mae; sisters, Frances Alley of Salisbury, NC and Louise Trexler of Franklin, TN; and a beloved and special friend, Edith Drye of Concord, NC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harkey was preceded in death by his wife, Mae B. Harkey and brother, John Harkey.
The family would like to send special thanks to his church family and to Hospice at Charlotte for their love and support.
A service to celebrate the life of Daniel E. Harkey will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005 from All Faith Chapel at Sunset Memory Gardens, Lawyers Road with The Reverend Jacob Golden officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum. The family will greet friends at Cokesbury United Methodist Church from 12 Noon until 1:00 p.m. at which time the family will go in procession to the cemetery.
Memorials may be made in remembrance of Daniel E. Harkey to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 6701 Idlewild Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
