Great history professor loved his classes

Mr. Raper was my professor. A wonderful teacher. I will always remember him with great fondness. He loved England and Queen Elizabeth II. Hope he is having tea and a chat with Her Majesty.

One of the Best teachers I ever had and an inspiration to keep me on my path to become a professional archaeologist and historian. I hope I made you proud Professor!

Stephen, I was just thinking about him a few days ago before I heard about this... I have several stories and comments that I used in my classes at ODU and TCC that are directly from my wonderful experiences with Derris... some not repeatable here, but students love them! I still think his encouragement of students to travel and study abroad is one of his best legacies. I went to London and Amsterdam, Civil War battlefields as well as the inauguration of George W. Bush in 2001... we were...

So sorry to hear about Derris's passing. I was lucky enough to go on 3 of Derris's trips to England and Scotland. And to have him as a history professor. He was the best. Stephen, may you take comfort in knowing Derris is with God now.

His was the rare class (American History) that you hated when it ended as you were always caught up in his story telling and passion. RIP Professor.

Derris was by far the best history professor, I had the good fortune to have as an instructor. I can still see him sitting on the edge of his desk, mesmerizing the class, by retelling historic events, as if he lived the event. His delivery and substance definitely made a lasting impact on me, as I was in his class over 40 years ago. So very sorry to learn of his passing.

Oh my! How I loved Derris. He was the consummate professor. I ended up living in London because of him. Would meet with Derris and Stephen at the Constitution for a drink or two or three. Rest in eternal peace, my friend. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Stephen, I am so very sorry to learn of Derris' passing. He seemed so well when we visited, and I didn't expect to lose him so soon. He was such a great man, and I was proud to call him my friend. I will treasure forever our timers together. Please know you have my very sincere condolences. God bless you, my friend.
