June 21, 1938 - February 16, 2018
Donald T. Savage, beloved husband of Patricia A. Savage passed away at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on February 16, 2018 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Sadly, Don had valiantly battled Merkel Cell Carcinoma since late summer 2016. Merkel Cell Carcinoma is a rare cancer that usually first manifests itself as a skin cancer.
Donald was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts to Joseph and Marion Savage of Millers Falls, Massachusetts, now deceased. In addition to his wife, Donald leaves behind his brother Robert Savage of Fairfax, Virginia, cousin Donna and her husband Gary Plante of Bradenton, another cousin Robert Bellemare and his wife Susan of West Whately, Massachusetts and their son Jesse Bellemare and his wife Sarah and their daughters Ada and Lucy of Greenfield, Massachusetts.
Donald and Patricia were married in Arlington, Massachusetts on July 20, 1969, the day the astronauts landed on the moon.
Donald received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration at the University of Massachusets, followed by obtaining a Master's Degree and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin. Donald was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Clark University in Worcester, Masssachusetts, then an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Maine at Orono.
In 1976, after 12 years of teaching, Donald became employed by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington serving in the Financial Structure Section, Division of Research and Statistics first as an Economist, then a Senior Economist. Donald retired in July 1998 and with his wife moved to Sarasota where they established many close friendships and enjoyed the cultural amenities offered by the Sarasota Community. In 2004, Don became active in the Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning where he served as Registrar for several years. He remained active with SILL until the time of his death. Until Don became too ill to travel, Don and his wife enjoyed travelling-- especially to Hawaii and Europe.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on March 21st at the Church of St. Thomas More in Sarasota. A reception will follow in the Spirit Center across the church courtyard. Interment will be held in the spring at Highland Cemetery in Millers Falls, Massachusetts – the date yet to be set.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Don to the National Parkinson Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018.
Donald's passing will leave an enormous void in the life of his wife and brother and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
