Not sure what to say?

I modeled my own teaching of music theory and ear training on the the superb teaching of Dorothy K Payne at the Eastman School of Music and was by her, inspired to continue on to earn there a PhD in music theory. As well as being an incredible teacher and pianist (she accompanied me on clarinet for the Performer's Certificate), making all concepts intelligible, she was a consummate musician. At the time, she was the only woman on the ESM music theory faculty.

Dorothy was a mentor of mine at the University of Texas where she inspired me to be a better student and, later, a better teacher. She has had a profound influence on the manner by which I dealt with my own students in and out of the classroom. I am saddened by the fact that, in the future, others will not benefit by the wisdom and kindness that Dorothy had to share.

Dorothy has been a continual inspiration to me ever since having the great fortune of being in her music theory class at Eastman in 1976. Her musicianship, intelligence, generosity, and wit remain vivid memories nearly 35 years later. I mourn her passing and offer my sympathy to her family.

It is with great sadness that I read about the death of our dear friend "Dean Dot" A very few months after arriving in Columbia, she had become a most beloved figure in this city. Her wit, intellect and poise, were greatly appreciated. She was a marvel and we, who knew her, will be more than saddened to learn of her death. My sympathy go out to her beloved siblings. Dorothy was a dear and cherished friend and we mourn her passing. We have especially fond memories of her quick wit that is mentioned in the obit, and our discussions of music theory with her. We will also miss the annual performances by her and her siblings that we eagerly looked forward to every year. Our condolences to those siblings and the rest of her family.

The world of classical music was graced significantly by Dorothy's abilities to be a strong leader, a kind lady, and a marvelous musician. We are proud to have known her and thankful for her compassion and wit.
