Our deepest sympathy to the family of Gerhard Ringel. We lived across the street from the Ringels for 10 years and became good friends. He was an amazing man and had an amazing life. We still have some framed butterflies he gave us on our wall and will remember him fondly each time we look at them.

I took Gerhard's "Combinatorics" class at UCSC around 1982. We used his text book "Map Color Theorem" and we went through it cover to cover. He was a very popular professor among math students, myself included.

He hosted our class for a party at his house on Westcliff at the end of the quarter.

Not mentioned in the article was that in the 1980's when he was in his sixties, he was an avid wind surfer and was seen frequently along Westcliff Drive launching his board in heavy surf...
