Edward Dahm Obituary

Published by D. O. McComb and Sons - Lakeside Park on Dec. 22, 2016.
Edward M. Dahm, 86, Co-Founder of Mike's Carwash, died December 22, 2016. He was born in Fort Wayne, March 21, 1930, the son of Albert ("Bert") and Catherine (Michel) Dahm. "Ed was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. A man of simple, unwavering faith in God and others." Ed graduated from St. Jude Catholic School in 1944, attended two years at St. Joseph's High School in Rensselaer, IN, and then graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948. He attended Indiana University for 2 years before joining his brother Joe in the carwash business in 1950. Ed was a pioneer in the conveyor automatic carwash industry with the first automatic carwash in Indiana and the eighteenth in the United States. The carwash motto was "Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated." He said what made the carwashes great was the quality of its people, the associates. The associates were like family to Ed and Joe. Ed's leadership in the car wash industry was recognized early on as he was chosen president of the International Carwash Association and he was inducted into the Carwash Hall of Fame. Ed was involved in many church, community, and civic affairs including serving in the United States Navy Reserve for 8 years. Ed organized the Fort Wayne Chapter of Citizens for Decent Literature, started and ran a paperback bookmobile offering free or reduced cost books, and served on the board of Benet Learning Center. Ed was a life-long parishioner at St. Jude Catholic Church where he served as Eucharistic Minister. He was the co-founder of what he considered one of his greatest achievements, the St. Jude Chapel of Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. With the blessing of then Bishop John D. D'Arcy and former Pastor John Pfister, the Chapel was opened in 1985 and offers an opportunity for perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Since the Chapel opened, there have been over a million hours of adoration. For nearly 60 years, Ed corresponded weekly with 45 different Carmelite Monasteries throughout the US asking for prayers for countless individuals and families. Ed was a devoted husband to his wife Linda during the nearly 62 years of their marriage, and was by her side when she died two years ago. Throughout his life Ed enjoyed many wonderful experiences at Lake Wawasee. He and his beloved dog Bella were on the way to the lake for Christmas when he died. Ed and Linda opened their Wawasee summer cottage to family and friends. Ed especially enjoyed being at the lake with his 16 grandchildren where they gathered with their cousins. He often told the grandkids "Aren't we having fun." Ed received the Notre Dame Man of the Year, the Xavier University Man of the Year and Father Thomas A Brandon Knights of Columbus Council #4048 Man of the Year. In 1978 Ed was named an honorary Fire Chief by the Fort Wayne Fire Department. He was awarded the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year in 1999. He was inducted into the Greater Fort Wayne Business Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the Donald Wolf Award in 2014. Surviving are his two brothers Joe (Dene) Dahm and Mike (Dee Dee) Dahm; his five children, Jerry (Ann) Dahm of Fort Wayne, Anne (Mark) Alderfer of Indianapolis, Joe (Joanne) Dahm of Chicago, Bert Dahm of Fort Wayne, and Maureen Hunzicker of Louisville; his 16 grandchildren also survive him, James, Patrick, Casey, Henry, Claire, Sam, Peter, John, David, Andrew, Catharine, Mary, Ben, Jane, Grace, and Edward. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at St. Jude Catholic Church on the corner of E. State Blvd. and Randalia Drive, Fort Wayne, with visitation from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. Most Revered Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades officiating. Calling also from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Chapel, 1140 Lake Ave, with a Rosary recited led by Fr. Robert D'Souza at 7:30 p.m. Burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. "The family sincerely thanks all of the responders who assisted at the accident scene including police, fire, and medical responders and asks for continued prayers for all involved." Memorials may be made to St. Jude Catholic School Tuition Fund, St. Jude Perpetual Adoration Chapel Fund, 2110 Pemberton Drive, Fort Wayne, IN 46805 www.stjudefw.org or to Bishop Dwenger High School Tuition Fund, 1300 E. To Mo and the Dahm family-

So sad to hear about Ed. What an amazing man! When I think of Ed I see a very generous man of spirit who lived in God's grace as his loyal servant. A man of high integrity with an optimistic attitude that was shared with family and strangers alike. I always felt so welcome and honored in his presence. May God bless Ed and his family.

To everyone in Ed`s family:

My Dad, Larry and I are very sorry to learn of Ed`s passing. Dad and Ed knew each other since they were in high school. My Dad went to South Side and I know he had a lot of friends that went to different schools like Ed did. I met Ed and his brother, Joe, after we moved to Fort Wayne in 1969. Dad and I really thought a lot of Ed and are going to miss him. I know you are going through a tough time right now and we hope that better days are ahead for all of you.

Dear Dahm Family,

My Mom (Colleen Griffith) and your Mom were cousins. Your Great-Grandmother, Rosie Blaising and my Grandmother, Cleo Chaney were sisters. I saw your Dad off and on at family weddings/funerals and always found him to be a kind, gracious and caring man. I took classes with your Mom at IPFW years ago and found her also to be a warm, engaging person. I am sure that this is a truly difficult time and a great loss to your family. I will continue to pray and keep you in my thoughts.

Dear Dahm Family,
So sorry to hear about the tragic passing of Mr. Dahm and also the recent passing or Mrs. Dahm. Such wonderful memories of a wonderful family we came to know during many special years at Lake Wawasee. Our hearts go out to all the Dahms knowing this is now a very difficult holiday season.

Dear Dahm family, my husband, John Ott, worked work Linda many moons ago at the mental health center (now Park Center). She and Ed hosted many gatherings where her crab dip was in high demand and Ed wad always ready for a celebration, including ripping and throwing gift wrap with gusto and abandon. They were kind and generous folk and we enjoyed knowing them both. Our condolences along with gratitude for life lived well.

Jerry, and all the Dahm family, my prayers are with you. Ed was one of the true giants of the carwash industry, one of the "founding fathers" of the business we grew up in. His leadership and attitude were always exemplary. We learned so many things from him and the Dahm family, just from being in the same business and paying attention.
Ed, you will be missed!

December 28, 2016

Dear Jerry,

Ed was indeed a pioneer in the carwash industry. You have to know that growing up your family name is one that I got to know early on in my life. Dahm and Jurkens were among the names that I have heard since I can remember. These were the guys that created an industry and made it a legitimate profession.

I will never forget the moments I would have with your dad at the shows. I always looked forward to seeing him. I can't ever remember him without a smile on his face. He was always so kind to me. I have to believe your dad treated me as he did out of respect for my father. Either way I was honored that he would take the time with me. He is one of those guys that I always looked up to. As I came into the industry in 1981, looking at what he and Joe had started and built to me was amazing. Based on my upbringing I have at least some idea of what it takes to do what they did. As with my dad, the carwash business wasn't what they did it was who they were. I look at guys like your dad and thank them for teaching me it is possible to be truly passionate about what you do and if you follow that passion you will never work a day in your life. It's your dad and a few others that paved the way for me. I know that, and will never be able to thank them enough for their work and the life it has given me. I just wish I had told your father that.

Please know that the Fazio family is so sorry for your loss and that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

With warm regards,
Paul Fazio

I met Ed Dahm approximately 40 years ago. In your life, you only meet a handful of people who really influence you, who make you step back and look at things differently. Ed was one of those people. Watching how Ed cared for both his employees and his customers changed the way that I viewed my business and my life. His compassion, passion, and overall life outlook profoundly impacted me for the better. He will be deeply missed.

December 28, 2016

To The Dahm family: My mother, Margaret Bougher Jehl has been Ed's classmate from St. Jude and CC and has always been very proud of Ed's accomplishments and his "Faith With Action." The 24 hour prayer chapel at St Jude has been a frequent place of prayer and peace for my mother and myself and the Jehl family. On behalf of Margaret and the Tom Jehl family, we want to say Ed made a real difference during his lifetime and his works on earth will continue to make an eternal difference.

December 28, 2016

I pass along many thoughts and prayers for Ed and the family. It is a sad loss when we loose someone we love regardless of their age and so suddenly. I did not know Ed personally. My son worked for Mike's (now Crew) and spoke very highly of Ed.
Ed reached out to all levels of employees to make each of them be the best they can be. And was very successful. When we lost our daughter, Ed came to her funeral and his kind words were a comfort to us. A person who never meant us, made such an impact by his presence that day.
Its a difficult time, a sad time, and a day that will not be forgotten. He was an impact to so many and will remain in our hearts. I am so sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy and prayers for Ed and his family. Our families began in the car wash industry about the same time. I was fortunate enough to enjoy many memories and adventures with Ed. Not only will all of us who knew Ed miss his warmth, friendship and passion but that wonderful twinkling smile. What a fabulous guy I will miss you Ed .
