Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Eleanor J. Sopp (nee Justus) passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the age of 86. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Richard A. Sopp, Jr. She was the beloved Mother of Jeannie (John) Smith, Janice (Richard) Schuth, and preceded in death by her son, Lee Sopp. Dear Grandmother to Sean Smith, Courtney Schuth, Anna Schuth, and Grant Schuth. Dear Sister, aunt and friend of many.

Eleanor was retired from owning and operating her own embroidery business. Her church affiliations included Bethesda UCC and St. John UCC Manchester.

Along with her late husband Dick, Ellie served to help many organizations. Philanthropy was a big part of her life. Most recently she served as the President of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary #183 in South St. Louis followed by the Department President for the State of Missouri MCLA. She was a past Matron of Ballwin Chapter #435, Order of the Eastern Star and a Past District Deputy Grand Matron. Eleanor served as President of Moolah Ladies Temple Club that supported the Shriners. Ellie and Dick were members of the St. Louis Steam Train Association where she was known as the chef on the Ellie’s Deli dining car serving the crew of the Frisco 1522 on their many excursions. She was famous for having barrels of her delicious chocolate chip cookies.

Those who knew Ellie remember her smile and willingness to help friends and family. Her family knew her as an extremely loving, talented, and caring Mother who could do anything she set out to accomplish. She loved the outdoors and was an artist and a great cook. Ellie will be missed by many.

Services: The family will be holding a private memorial service at a later date. Interment will be Thursday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery next to her loving husband. Memorials are appreciated to Shriners Hospitals for Children, St. Louis unit. No visitation. Services are being provided by the SCHRADER Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Road in Ballwin. Not sure what to say?

Jeannie, Janice and Families, Your mom will be missed by many. What a wonderful legacy she passed to all of you. Know that we are thinking of you as you begin to heal from your mom’s death. Fondly, Janet & Doug Bachman

Jeanie, you have our heart felt sympathy. Your mother is a person that I wish I had known. I guess it runs in the family!

Jeanne and Janice,

So sorry for the loss of your Mom. Hoping you will be comforted by the many happy memories you have. God bless.

Marilyn Collins ODonnell

How accomplished she was and a lasting impression she imprinted on you once you knew her. Her spirit will always live on.

I have fond memories of Ellie. She was very talented and I have several items embroidered by her. Ellie and Dick were a valuable asset to Moolah Temple. God's peace.

I was a member of The St Louis Steam Train Association. I enjoyed Eleanor “Ellie” J Sopp and her husband Dick Sopp company, her chocolate chip cookies, their mess service on all our 1522 Steam train excursions. The Christmas Parties were held at their house. She is in Heaven with Dick now. Being interned at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with Dick. The Sopp’s were good friends. They are both missed.

Ellis was a beautiful, classy lady who will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was an inspiration to all of us.

It is hard to put into words to describe what good people Ellie and Dick were. They always accompanied us on trips with steam locomotive 1522 and pampered us to no end. Dick was a hard working funny guy and Ellie was like a little pixie. They fed us like royalty on our trips and none of us will ever forget them. RIP Ellie and spend your time with Dick. There were no better folks around.

A loving, caring woman. She will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
