Floyd Devey Obituary
Salt Lake City, Utah-Floyd Benjamin Devey passed away on September 10, 2013 in Salt Lake City. He was born February 19, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah to his mother Florence Amelia West and his father Franklin Avery Devey. His mother died just 10 days after his birth and he was raised by a loving mother who raised him as her own with love and compassion. She was not only his mother but also a loving grandmother to Floyd and Dowena's children. He attended Olympus High School. He married Dowena Joan Vander Werff on February 14, 1959 and later sealed in The Salt Lake Temple. Floyd had many abilities and skills which he generously shared with friends and neighbors. He served in the US Marine Corps Reserve. He helped others during his 30 years on the Salt Lake City Fire Department and retired as a Captain. He was a handyman and a first responder for widows. Floyd is preceded in death by Baby Boy Devey, parents Franklin Avery Devey and Florence Amelia West, Step-Mother Alice Devey and sisters Florence Gheen and Fern Soderstrom. He is survived by wife Dowena Joan Devey, children Daniel Floyd (Denise), Dexter Benjamin (Robin), David Franklin (Shelley), Debra Hadlock (Kenneth), Darin John (Brandi) and De Ann Moore (Donald), sister Fay Hansen (Norman) 28 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Floyd will be remembered as our husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa. He left us much too soon, but with memories we will all cherish.
Services will be held September 14 at 11:00 A.M. at Highland Stake Center 2738 South Fillmore Street. The family will receive friends September 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary at 3401 Highland Drive and again September 14 at 10:00 A.M. before services at the ward.

Floyd and Dowena showed a lot of kindness many times in their lives to a lot of people, including to me. One time, my kids did a surprise repair, spruce up of my home for me as I was out of town. Floyd and Dowena apparently found out about it. Floyd fixed a kitchen oven and Dowena washed a lot of very dusty curtains for me. I think they have both quietly done things like this for many people, including their famies, neighbors, and folks they don't even know very well. These kinds of things are a testament to Floyd and Dowena's example and legacy for their descendants. I'm sure Floyd is watching over Dowena, especially, until they will be together again. Floyd was a great neighbor to have next door. I was a single parent raising two kids. If Floyd happen to see me outside trimming a tree, etc., he would come right over and help me. Floyd was a good man who was very accepting of others and always willing to offer a helping hand. I'm sure he will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy to Floyd's family.

I am honored to call Floyd a friend, and had wonderful opportunities to learn and grow from his life examples and friendship. Floyd is truly one of our Heavenly Father's choice, and great sons. Floyd, thanks for the memories.

I will always remember Floyd fondly as one of the finest people one could ever meet. He treated everyone fairly with equal dignity and consideration for all. His presence at many family camping reunions is memorable, and he taught me many priceless lessons and imparted his wisdom when we worked on re-modeling Wilma's basement. What a good man! He was another Father to me. I cannot think of a single time when we met that he missed asking how I was doing and he was genuine in wanting to know. It seems I had him by my side growing up in so many aspects of life, learning an honest work ethic at his home, being taught in church meetings over many years, going on so many scout trips with him, just spending time visiting at the house, even having him come work at my mothers home after my dad died. I was blessed to live a few doors down, blessed to have his son as a best friend and blessed to witness every family on Glenmare Street find joy in the pure service he offered so often.

I have been torn by a need to make my one visit a year with my son, or to attend the funeral for Uncle Floyd. I will attend the viewing Friday night, but have to choose my own son over the funeral. It was a very hard decision, and I want you all to know I have a multitude of fond memories of Uncle Floyd and ALL the Devey family. Love, Dale

I love this man. He has always been there to lend a helping hand or just to give you an award winning smile. He was a tender hearted teddy bear and he taught the world so much. He was blessed and raised a wonderful family and he treated them well; he was so very proud of all of you. His example of service, empathy and love will live on in the hearts of so many. I am sure he had many that greeted him in heaven and thanked him for the service he rendered here and the great man he was. To his family we express our love and support. To Dowena, Thank you for helping to create the man, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband he became.

My father wanted no fanfare. He lead a quiet unassuming life where he tried his best to think of others first - this will be his legacy. I was blessed to have such an example.

We we're priveleged to have had such a wonderful uncle. We spent many days with him and his family in the pursuit of businesses, service and many Fire fighter parties and events. We will miss you!

Floyd will always have a special place in my heart for the many ways he helped me, especially in the German extraction - but also in other personal help. I'm surely glad I knew him, what a great person!

I was very sorry to hear of Floyd's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him for several years on the SLCFD, especially in the early 1980s when he was a Lieutenant at Station 2. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a big toothy grin and eyes that lit up in the most mischevious way when he thought of something funny or ironic. He laughed loudly and often. He was a gift to his crew and always very clear about his deep love for family. I am very sorry for your loss and keep you in prayer and Floyd in loving memory.

I remember him coming over to our house to play chess with my dad, fixing just about everything, and helping my mom numerous times. He drove us all for endless years to and from Hygea, the movies, junior high and high school stomps and parties, the grocery store or whatever else was so important at the moment. I remember him yelling "Nut" at the dog, walking up and down the street, falling asleep in church and one one single occasion, saying "Damit DeAnn!" What a wonderful person. We are sorry about this loss.

Floyd was a very industrious and talented man. He could built and repair anything. He was always willing to use those talents where he saw a need.
He was an example in so many aspects of his life. Floyd and Dowena were exceptional parents and raised a wonderful family who emulate the values they were taught.
He touched so many lives. His generous, loving, kind and compassionate spirit will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May God continue to bless,comfort and strengthen his family during their sorrow. What a blessing it is to know that we can all be reunited again.

My most prominent memory of Floyd was of him coming over to our home on Bryan Ave, and fixing our dryer. When we gave him something to eat, he said, " Thanks a million." Fond memories.
