HARVEY INGHAM Obituary

HARVEY INGHAM III

N. Palm Beach, FL.

Harvey Ingham III, age 91, passed away on March 9, 2013 at his home in North Palm Beach, FL. He was born on April 20, 1921 in Valparaiso, IN, to Harvey Jr. and Helen Louise (Prater) Ingham.

Harvey grew up in Washington DC and Pasadena Ca. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH in 1939. After high school he attended Stanford University until joining the Army Air Corps in 1942. During World War II he served as a pilot and a communications officer until his discharge in 1945. He later attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in Journalism.

Harvey married Jean (Martin) in 1943 in San Antonio,TX. They raised a family of four children and were happily married for 50 years. Harvey started his business career as a newspaper reporter for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. He developed extensive expertise in the field of communications in various management positions with the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, Philadelphia Evening and Sunday Bulletin, and Ridder Publications in San Jose, CA. In 1975 his company, Ingham Communications, Inc., acquired KIEM-TV in Eureka, CA where he served as President and station manager. Harvey was well known for the thought-provoking and colorful community comments he delivered weekly.

As a young man, Harvey was a scratch golfer and pursued his passion for the game throughout his life. He served as president of Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata CA and chose to retire to Lost Tree Village in Florida in order to play its championship golf course. At Lost Tree, Harvey reconnected with numerous life-long friends also living there. He was always surrounded by friends on the golf course and in the club house. Had Will Rogers known him, he undoubtedly would have said, "I never met a man who didn't like Harvey," and Harvey, in return, had the gift of making everyone he met feel like a friend.

Harvey's great grandfather was William Harvey Ingham, a noted Iowa pioneer, and his grandfather, Harvey Ingham co-founded the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, and his parents, Harvey Jr. and Louise.

Harvey is survived by his children Harvey IV [Jane], Stephanie Schutzendorf (Gordon), Henry (Cheryl) and Donald (Barbara); grandchildren Peter Seabrook, Audrey Chivukula (Roger), Sarah White (Jordan), Jennifer Schutzendorf, Kyle Ingham, Michelle Gurner (John), Donald Ingham, Jr. (Emily) and Scott Ingham; brother Richard S. Ingham; eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. The family is planning a service in Des Moines, Iowa at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to your local Hospice provider.

Harvey was a member of America's greatest generation. He served his country, lived the American Dream, and left this world on his own terms. All who knew him will miss him.

My greatgrandmother (nee Ingham) was related to Harvey . She married Clarence Doxsee and lived in Redwood City, CA. My grandmother Caroline Doxsee Woodhams told me we were related but I was never sure exactly how. I too live in Eureka and enjoy the PBS station that he helped create. Sadly I only met Harvey in passing.

The correct address for Tom Peters is Eureka, California, not Colorado if any family members are looking. My email is posted below.

Harvey was my mom's best friend in the years following the death of his dear wife, Jean, and my step-father, Mabis Chase. The four of them were good pals for many years. (btw, Walter Shotwell, nice to see you're still kickin' around Des Moines!) I worked at the R&T for a few years (during Steve's tenure) and have been in Easton, MD since 1987. Harvey was one of the sweetest, funniest men I have ever had the pleasure to know. We had dinner together often in FL when I visited my mom, and his sense of humor was legendary. It's true that all who met him enjoyed his company, and I feel privileged to have known him. He & my mom had grand times together, and we'll sorely miss him.

Harvey was my first cousin. We reconnected a few years back. I never knew he was so accomplished, but I did know he was a special person. Sending our condolences from the Prater Family: Judy, Susan and Marsha.

Reading about Mr. Ingham, I was favorably struck by the Will Rogers quote since I am author of the Harper-Collins biography, "Never Met A Man I Didn't Like: The Life and Writings of Will Rogers." What the cowboy-philosophy was saying that he gave everyone a first and fair chance to prove themselves without prejudice at the time of them having "met." I am certain, after reviewing the life of this extraordinary man that the for those reasons--the usage applied to Harvey Ingham III--was so appropriate.

My great grandmother was Mary Ingham. My sister Lynn has a geneology of the Inghams up to Harvey II. She'd love to share it with you. She has photos as well. Her email is offline (vandals!) but she'll post here soon.
[email protected] is mine.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I knew Harvey well as we were growing up and entering adulthood. We also both served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII, though not in the same unit. Then I had my career with the Des Moines Register and Tribune while Harvey wrote for the Minneapolis, Philadelphia and other papers. He was a good friend.

So very sorry to read of Mr. Ingham's passing. I was very familiar with him when he was with KIEM-TV CH. 3 in Eureka and he was very well thought of in the local broadcast industry. Having been a former employee of the station prior to his being here, I was always interested in what was happening with the station. I know he will be missed by all who knew him. Please know that you're in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dear Hank and Cheryl:

We were saddened to learn of Harvey's passing. Harvey was certainly an accomplished individual who contributed immensely to his country and to the communities in which he lived. We recognize that he will be sorely missed by family, friends, and his buddies on the golf course.

Please accept our deepest and most sincere sympathy at this time of loss. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Louie & Linda Bucher
