Dear Monica and Family,
We are so very sad to hear from Michael of Hank's passing. Our thoughts go back over the years to those early Albuquerque days when we first met Monica and Hank, recent arrivals from Chile, your kind interest and help with Matthew and our adventures and fun together. Howard was on Hank's Masters Committee, and he remembers Hank's project determining the strength of the sound he could generate from heat. He was honored to be on Hank's committee and proud to hear of his success in his profession.
It was wonderful many years later when you invited us to your Huntington Beach home and when you visited us in New Mexico. And then we lost track again; life just takes over and now Hank is no longer with us.
Yesterday Howard checked on the tapestry that Hank and Monica donated to UNM. This beautiful work of Leonardo Nierman is still hanging on the North Wall of the lobby of the Mechanical Engineering Building on the UNM Main Campus. It took his breath away, when he saw it again after all these years. There is a plaque under it:
Leonardo Nierman, Rhapsody 1993.
Donated by Mr. and Mrs. H. Henry Hirsch, "In loving memory of our parents"
Donated the the UNM College of Fine Arts, Loaned to the UNM School of Engineering.
Hank was one of a kind. His cheerful and "can do" attitude and great talents gave a boost and inspiration to those around him. We are thinking of you with great sympathy. Love from Mona, Matthew and Howard.

Querida Monica,
Grande y chocante mi sorpresa al leer hoy en el Mercurio la partida de "Chito".
Recibe tu y tu familia mis mas sinceras condolencias.
A pesar que no hemos tenido la oportunidad de viajar a California y haberlos visto, son muchos los buenos recuerdos que tengo de mi infancia y juventud con Hernan y contigo.
Que Dios y el tiempo, y la cercan
