Ivan Haynes Obituary

Ivan Wycliffe Haynes COLUMBIA - Ivan Wycliffe Haynes passed away January 10, 2018 just short of his 47 th birthday. He was the son of Marie Hunt Haynes and Wycliffe Eskrigge (Wyc) Haynes. He graduated from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School and served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge. Ivan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of South Carolina and was employed by the University of South Carolina Mathematics Department in Columbia. SC. He is survived by his loving parents and uncle, Robert Blackstone Haynes of Highlands, North Carolina; a beloved aunt, Dr. Jettie V. Hunt of Boyertown, Pennsylvania, and several uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his grandparents, C.W. Haynes and Dr. Edith Eskrigge Haynes, James Wesley Hunt, Sr. and Marie Edwards Hunt all of Columbia. Well-known by name in the Southeast as a multi-champion "A" rider in Enduro Motorcycle racing, he cherished the outdoors and camaraderie of his competitors. Friends consider him loyal and altruistic by nature. He leaves a legacy of outreach, lending respectful dignity to each soul he met along his path. Remembrance may be made to any animal or human shelter, the Riverbanks Zoo or charity of ones choice. A private memorial service will be at a later date. He will be laid to rest in his family plot at historic Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC. You may share online condolences at www.elmwoodfhcolumbia.com.

I had Ivan in several classes when he was a student at the University of South Carolina, and I was second reader on his masters thesis. He was a pleasure to have in class. His death saddens me greatly.

I don't know if you remember me or not from our old days in DC when I lived with Sue Self at Arlington Towers. We had fun times in our younger days and I was so saddened to read about your son in The State. At first I thought it was you since you both look so much alike. Wyc and Marie,
Both of you and Bobby have been in my thoughts and prayers ever since yesterday, when I learned of Ivans passing. It breaks my heart to know that he is gone. Your loss is great and I wish that there was something that I could say or do to ease your pain but I have nothing . . . other than to remind you that Ivan was well liked, respected and appreciated by many. I dont know if he ever told you but Ivan and I would occasionally find outselves in the same dance classes; we enjoyed dancing together as we attempted the salsa and tango. In fact, my last correspondence with Ivan was probably three years ago when he called to tell me about a new Latin dance school that he thought Id like. I will miss Ivans warm personality and smile.

We will miss you so much Ivan. You were a special cousin with many wonderful memories of all of us at the farm growing up and spending time at the beach in Fripp Island. You touched so many lives and will always be in our hearts and prayers.

I can't even begin to express my sadness that Ivan left us so early. He was my fun younger cousin, riding motorcycles throughout our childhood at the farm. Golden, special days together. Ivan would drop in during the holidays. I loved seeing him. If I ever asked him for help he was ALWAYS there. I miss him, I pray for his soul, and I love him forever.

I don't know when Ivan's birthday was in 1971 but we have twins born that year who knew of Ivan at least. We (Rhoda and I) lived across Heathwood from Dr. and Mr.C.W. Haynes in their number 1 Heathwood Circle. Is a nice neighborhood and all your family were good neighbors. Sounds as though Ivan had the gift of understanding mathematics. Know you'll miss him. We extend condolences at this time of the end of his life on this small but so fortunate planet.

Ivan,
I am going to miss the intellectual challenges, the jokes that were usually above everyone else's head, but most of all, I am going to miss your smile, and your kindness even when you may not have felt like being kind...you always were.

To his family,
My deepest condolences. Just know in one conversation I had with Ivan, he told me that he had family that loved him very much, and any consequence from mischief was his own to deal with. I can guarantee that depending on who you ask, some will say Ivan sometimes had people with questionable reputations, vices, and situations around. This may be true, and be glad it was the case, because he was able to impact some of them, and that impact could be the difference in their lives. May God comfort you, that you may find peace in a tragic time.
