James E. Phillips Oglesby was born March 4, 1960 to the parentage of Viola Washington Oglesby and James E. Phillips in Lyons Georgia. He departed this life on Sunday, September 18, 2022.
James joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church under the late Reverend T.H. Kent at an early age. James was raised by his grandparents, Deacon Turner and Emma Fair.
James graduated from Reidsville High School in 1978. After graduating high school, he worked at the Georgia State Prison as a correctional officer. James went into the medical field in the early 1980s. He worked at Meadows Regional Hospital and Toombs Nursing Home. After moving to Baxley in 1987, he began working at The Appling Healthcare System, working for 16 1⁄2 years there. It was here that James garnered several accolades including 1990 Top Gun Award, Employee of the Month in 1996 and Employee of the Year in 1997. After moving back to Lyons in 2002, James worked at Bethany Nursing Home, concluding a 30 year career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. His two greatest hobbies were poetry and singing.
James was preceded in death by his mother, a brother Jimmy Lee Oglesby, two sisters Lelia Mae Burford, Crystal Phillips Martin, and Eloise Johnson and a grandson, Jwond Oglesby.
James leaves behind to treasure his memory, his father, James E Phillips, Wilmington DE; Two daughters, Felicia (Stephen) Sharpe, Vidalia GA and Jamie (John) Oglesby, Dublin GA; Two sons, Marcus L. Oglesby of Atlanta, GA and Wesley Lewis of Waycross GA; one stepson Maurice Oglesby of Vidalia GA; Two stepdaughters Gena Oglesby of Vidalia GA and Shakerria Jackson of Atlanta GA; Two brothers Jessie Lee Oglesby, of Winston Salem, NC and John C Bogan of Brooklyn, NY; Two sisters, Roberta Jackson of Fayetteville NC, Susie Ann Butts of Washington DC, six grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Public Visitation will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022 from 1 PM until 6 PM at the Vincent R. Drummer Funeral Home in Lyons, GA.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 11:00 AM from the Sanctuary of Evergreen True Vine Holiness Church in Vidalia, GA. Rev. Wilbur Little is the Pastor, Bishop Vincent R. Drummer will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Ogden Mills Cemetery in Reidsville, GA.
