Janis Westhoven Kern, 59, of Napoleon, Ohio, passed away, December 16, 2016 in Grand Rapids, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family.
Janis was born on December 1, 1957 in Napoleon, Ohio to the late Bernard and Mary (Long) Westhoven.
Janis was a 1976 graduate of Liberty Center High School. After high school Janis pursued a license in cosmetology. She later changed careers and worked for Huntington National Bank and Henry County Bank where she was promoted to head teller. Janis was an active member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Grand Rapids where she sang in the choir and was a member of the hand bell choir. Janis served as the caretaker for the church for many years and cooked many of the funeral luncheons held at the church. Janis was known for baking and cooking skills and organizing events for her family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, going to garage sales, cooking, collecting recipe books and she loved any reason to go shopping. However, most of all Janis loved spending time with her family and friends. Time spent with her daughter was always treasured. Janis will be forever remembered by her kindness and loving heart.
Janis is survived by a daughter: Kendra Kern, of Athens, Ohio; sisters: Jane (Robert) Ostlund, of Savannah, Georgia; Rose Dunlap, of Centerville, Indiana; Mary Sue (Robert) Stephey, of Columbus, Ohio; twin sister: Joann (Jim Frost) Westhoven, of Liberty Center, Ohio; brothers: Father Thomas Westhoven, of Franklin, Wisconsin; Vincent (Virginia) Westhoven, of Enola, Pennsylvania; Carl (Joyce) Westhoven, of Defiance, Ohio; George (Nancy) Westhoven, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Bernard (Kim) Westhoven, of Delta, Ohio; half-sister: Antoinette Westhoven, of St. Paul, Minnesota, special friend, Neal Slee, along with a host of loving family and friends.
Along with her parents, Janis was preceded in death by a sister: Claire Grace Westhoven; a half-sister: Sheila Westhoven; brothers: Peter Westhoven; half-brothers: Dr. Joseph Westhoven; Robert Westhoven; John Westhoven; Lawrence Westhoven and Leo Westhoven.
A Celebration of Janis’ Life will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 11:00 AM in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 14010 South River Road, Grand Rapids, Ohio with a funeral luncheon to follow.
