Dr. Jerry D. Chastain

Athens - Dr. Jerry D. Chastain, longtime Athens chiropractor, passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at the age of 62.
Dr. Chastain was born in Red Hill on Feb. 28, 1947. He graduated from Franklin County High School in 1965, attended UGA and West Georgia College in Carrollton. He graduated in 1971 with a degree in Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
In October of 1971, he joined the Chastain Chiropractic Clinic on Milledge Avenue in Athens. Dr. Chastain has faithfully served his patients for 36 years. He retired in April 2007.
Among the many accomplishments of Dr. Chastain was President of the Georgia Chiropractic Association from 1982 to 1984. He also was president of the Palmer Alumni of Georgia.
Dr. Chastain is survived by his dedicated, loving wife of 38 years, Bonnie Werthman Chastain. They were married July 16, 1971, in Davenport, Iowa, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She faithfully worked with him in his Milledge Avenue office for a number of years. The love, care and devotion that he and his wife shared was one to be envied. Dr. Chastain is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Max Chastain of Clayton, Elsie Chastain Smith and her husband, Emory, of Nashville, Tenn., Martha Chastain Floyd and her husband, Larry, of Lavonia, Betty Chastain Allen and her husband, Nick, of Salem, Vir., Judy Chastain of Martin and Sandy Chastain Glaze and her husband, Bobby, of Toccoa. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lettie Ruth Cole Chastain, his father, Gordon R. Chastain, and his brother, William Don Chastain.
Dr. Chastain will long be remembered for his dedication and exceptional care for his patients. His family and friends were important to him. He enjoyed planning and preparing the annual Chastain Chicken Barbecues held at their home. All who attended hold fond memories. He loved woodworking, the outdoors, reading and looked forward to getting away on camping trips in the North Georgia mountains.
A memorial service will be held at the Bernstein Funeral Home on the Atlanta Highway in Athens at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday.
